  1. Why Prefer Durysta over Other Treatments for Glaucoma? – Part 7 of 8 Durysta is the newest addition to available treatments for glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness across the globe. Durysta or bimatoprost implant, contains 10mcg of bimatoprost that is released into eyes with open angle glaucoma (OAG) or ocular hypertension (OHT). While glaucoma treatment starts with administering topical eye drops, there are various reasons that make this treatment less efficient. Minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries or MIGS are designed to treat glaucoma although some patients are not ideal candidates for such an approach. In this blog, we will discuss the reasons why Durysta treatment is preferred over other treatments for glaucoma. Eliminates the Need to Take Eye drops One of the major reasons why eye drops are less effective is the requirement to take them regularly. There are times when patients either forget to take their eye drops or are unable to do so due to age factors. This leads to reduced efficiency of the treatment and also causes fluctuation of intraocular pressure in the eye. On the other hand, Durysta, once implanted, releases the medication into the eye 24 hours a day; seven days a week, leaving no chance of forgetting to take medication. Better Efficacy Than Eye Drops It is a fact that when a patient takes a dose of glaucoma eye drops, only five percent of the medication actually goes beyond the cornea to the target tissues. This reduces the

  2. efficiency of the eye drops. Durysta is implanted in the intracameral cavity, which allows the medication to reach the target tissue directly, which boosts its efficacy as compared to eye drops. Helps with Fluctuations in Eye Pressure Unlike eye drops that are administered at specific time intervals, Durysta releases the medication continuously to the target tissue, which helps in the prevention of any fluctuations in intraocular pressure which you may see frequently with eye drops. Requires no Incision The MIGS that are used for treating glaucoma require some degree of incision, which can be a concern for some patients. With Durysta, there is no requirement for any incision in the eye and it can be implanted with a very fine 28 gauge needle. Also, there is a possibility that some patients may not qualify for a MIGS surgery, in which case, Durysta can be a viable option. Consult Today Durysta is a very efficient and convenient way to treat glaucoma but not everyone can get it. It is important to consult a good eye surgeon to get best advice on your candidature for Durysta. If you or a loved one is looking for an eye doctor in Waxahachie or nearby area, look no further.
