  1. Paul Mikus on Three top spots for your New York Memorial Day Staycation Since any of our favorite spots to vacation are closed or gave little notice as to availability, I wanted to share a few gems from my many years in New York for both New Yorkers and visitors who find themselves in the Big Apple this weekend. One of the many great things to do on a low budget is visit what is really the best pizzeria in New York. ( NO, NO , NO , not Rays). If you’re visiting Manhattan then you can quickly jump to Brooklyn and visit L&B Spumoni Gardens Pizza. As we all know, the world’s best pizza is in Brooklyn, and no one does it better than L&B. There are so many great pies to choose from, but don’t forget to save room for at least one plain slice to experience true New York pizza. Better yet, see if you can do the three slice fold over John Travolta perfected in the opening scene of Saturday Night Fever as he walks out of L&B. If you can make it over to the East Village another great spot for those of us who like to mix in an adult beverage or two on Memorial Day weekend is Please Don’t Tell on Saint Marks Place. It’s a bit of an adventure as you need to enter the bar through a phone booth (remember those?) that’s inside a hot dog joint. You will need to make reservations but can only do so the day of your visit, so be prepared to wait a bit, but the original cocktails are beyond worth the wait! Certainly the speakeasy feel is a unique experience by itself! If you happen to have guests in town and need to do something a little touristy, I highly recommend a trip to the Fraunces Tavern where you can try some great craft beers and listen to local live music. It dates back to the Revolutionary war and served as General George Washington’s headquarters at one point. It’s an easy walk around Lower Manhattan to see the NYSE or the South Street seaport. You can also jump right over to Ellis Island and see the Statue of Liberty to cap off the Memorial Day festivities! Hope everyone has a happy and healthy Memorial Day Weekend!
