  1. Migrating Oracle Database to Snowflake

  2. Oracle was first released commercially in 1979 and since then it has been the database management workhorse for organizations around the world. It can be operated on a wide range of hardware and software and is primarily known for its ability to quickly and effortlessly store and retrieve high volumes of data. Most critically, Oracle is ACID-compliant which means that data safety and data integrity is assured on Oracle. Moreover, it has been one of the first databases to have supported GNU/LINUX.

  3. Before going into the reasons why businesses want to migrate databases from Oracle to Snowflake, it is necessary to study each as a separate entity. • Oracle is a Relational Database Management System and offers customers a range of different platforms to work on. These include the Standard, Personal, Enterprise, and Express versions. The Real Application and Clustering Feature enable users to scale up and down in the utilization of storage facilities as per requirements. But what stands out for the Oracle database is the data security features and being able to track and monitor data access and usage.

  4. Snowflake, on the other hand, is a recently-introduced cloud-based data warehousing system and offered as a SaaS (Software-as-a-service) product. Several businesses now are migrating databases from Oracle to Snowflake, largely because of the several advanced features that this data warehouse brings to the table.  • Here are some of the benefits of Snowflake. • · Users on Snowflake can scale up or down in data storage utilization by paying only for the volume of resources used. • · Being based in the cloud, Snowflake offers unlimited computing and storage facilities.  • · A high performing platform. There is no drop in performance or speed even when multiple users simultaneously execute multiple queries.  • · In the event of an outage, there is zero downtime on Snowflake databases. The secondary databases are automatically triggered and work during an outage goes on as usual. When the outage is resolved, the primary databases are restored and updated.  • How to migrate databases from Oracle to Snowflake? • This process is done in four simple steps which are largely automated. • · Data has to be extracted first from the Oracle database and put in a CSV file with the SQL Plus query tool. This tool is available on the Oracle server.  • · The extracted data has to be processed and formatted so that it matches the type that is supported by the Snowflake architecture. This is critical in Oracle to Snowflake migration. • · The formatted data cannot be loaded directly into Snowflake but has to be kept in an internal or external staging area like S3 or Microsoft Azure. • · Finally, the files have to be copied from the staging area to Snowflake. The Data Loading Overview tool of Snowflake is used for migrating small databases while the COPY INTO command is for large databases. • With the right tools, the process of migrating database from Oracle to Snowflake can be fully automated.
