2. Introduction With the growing need for worldwide communication, the development of a sustainable infrastructure is extremely necessary. Governments and companies have invested to a large extent in establishing such facilities to even the remotest of the locations across the globe. Cellular networks and other technological instruments provide transmission of signals that have made such connection possible. With the continuous advancements of technologies, however, it is very difficult to predict the impact of climate change on the operational sustainability of communication networks. Yet, ICT companies, regulatory bodies and energy sector need to recognize the influence of changing physical environments and trends on electronic communication because of the potential risks summarized below: ICT infrastructure and the evolving It is anticipated that the annual amount of rainfall is expected to grow in the future. Studies have • estimated that in the next five decades, there will be an average ten percent increase in the rainfall received throughout the world. Due to this, the level of ground water will increase and will lead to potential risks of flooding. Because a lot of electronic equipment, such as underground cables and ducts are submerged below ground, the increasing ground water level will definitely pose a problem. Although, manufacturing waterproof electronic equipment or cases will solve this problem, but still the overall maintenance costs will increase considerably. Even in areas which are expected to show a decrease in annual rainfall, the situation is not much better. Less rainfall will dry out the ground faster, and the resulting changes in terrain will cause damage to the communication network equipment. The implications of pollution and global warming are widely known. Changes in worldwide • temperature are becoming more drastic and extreme with each decade. It has been estimated that the global temperature will increase by two to three degrees in the coming five decades. Most of the electronic and electrical components are highly sensitive to temperature changes, and are not generally designed to function at high temperatures. It is therefore, recommended that in future, manufacturers of electronic and electrical equipment should facilitate that the materials used in production are able to withstand and function within high temperature ranges. While installing communication equipment, such as wires and towers etc., it is important to take • into account that storms, strong winds and natural calamities can potentially cause irreparable damage to these infrastructural components. As evident from recent incidents of hurricanes in some major cities around the world, it is expected that this trend is going to continue in the future, and therefore, needs strong emphasis on the part of communication infrastructural providers. In addition, it is very difficult to predict beforehand what the damage it will cause to the equipment. While strong winds and storms can lead to total disconnection of communication networks, they Free Assignment Help Page 2

Although, wires and cables are laid underground, most of the long-range connectivity is still accomplished through overhead high capacity wires and other such equipment, which are left prone to destruction and damage. During incidents of storms and hurricanes, it becomes very difficult and expensive to repair and rebuild these equipment right from the very beginning. DEMAND FOR M2M & ICT’S RESPONSE With the growing advancements in cellular technology, the reach of mobile communication has extensively increased to almost every corner of the world. This trend is expected to grow even further into the future. This rise is most observed in the developing nations and fast growing economies such as India and China. Technologically advance mobile devices along with new mobile devices like tablets, etc, broadband services and M2M systems (ITU, 2011) are fueling the demand for improved communication technological standards and coverage. With the evolution of new technologies such as 3G, WiMAX etc., the global standards of communication have considerably gone up. Telecommunication sector research has shown that almost nine out of every ten countries have established a competitive market for telecom, internet and third-generation communication services providers. Some of the highly populated countries, such as India, Brazil, China and Russia have witnessed a strong rise in the number of cellular subscriptions over the past ten years. The extent to which cellular communication has penetrated the market has grown over fifteen folds in the past ten years. Almost ninety percent of the population has on an average one mobile subscription. This number is unnaturally high, especially for the Asia-Pacific region, which accounts for almost fifty percent of this share. India and China, which account for almost one-third of the world’s population, have registered 300 million subscribers each, in the past year, and have almost increased their market share to sixty percent. Even the Russian Federation is by no means far behind them. Various policies and reforms in most of the countries, over the past five years, have contributed in improving the overall market efficiency, and increasing the number of service providers who are always looking for ways of attracting consumers. Even countries with limited communication infrastructure, such as Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have simplified authorizations and minimized the administrative procedures as part of their licensing reforms. Other notable countries who have demonstrated strong growth due to ease in regulatory measures are India and Mexico. Quick response to allow licensing and spectrum allocation for 3G networks in these countries has paved the path for them to gradually adopt next generation 4G standards. Even developed nations like Canada and UK have shown quick response in facilitating spectrum for 4G standards for future adoption.
