  2. Great tips to reduce your sugar intake Finding it hard to give up on sugar? Well, you are not alone. Sugar is said to be just as addictive as drugs like cocaine. Thankfully, you can adopt simple methods that will help you eliminate sugar from your diet slowly and surely: 1. Always read food labels The thumb rule is that if sugar is the top ingredient, then it is a red flag. Sugar can be found even in foods like crackers and tomato sauce that you don’t normally think could be rich in sugar. Sugar also has aliases like molasses, cane syrup, sucrose etc. Make sure you know them all to prevent sugar from sneaking into your diet.

  3. 2. Load up your meals with healthy fats, fibers and proteins These foods slow down the rate at which sugar is released into the blood. That way you don’t end up feeling hungry and having cravings for sugars. Whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner, adding foods like oatmeal, avocados, eggs, apples, healthy oils such as olive oil etc. can help you reduce sugar cravings.

  4. 3. Avoid drinks loaded in sugars Everyone knows that sodas contain a huge amount of sugar. However, these are not the only drinks that are rich in sugars. Drinks like enhanced water, store bought smoothies, bottled milk or coffee drinks, energy drinks and bottled ice tea can contain equal amounts of sugar. Instead, opt to prepare these drinks at home so you have complete control on the amount of sugar that is actually going into them.

  5. 4. Think of dessert once in a while When you deprive yourself of something entirely, you are bound to have cravings. Think of including one meal with a dessert occasionally. Then, you will not feel the urge to consume your sugar quota through other sources like bread spreads, cereals etc.

  6. 5. Include fruits in your diet Think of substituting desserts with fruits. Fruits have natural sugars that are healthy. They are loaded with fiber and have fewer calories. You can also make them more interesting such as strawberries with yoghurt, grilled peaches etc.

  7. 6. Never skip a meal The key to eliminating sugar from your diet is to reduce the craving. When you skip a meal, your blood sugar levels drop significantly, leaving you wanting an instant rush of sugar. That is when you either reach out for sugar rich foods or fat rich foods. Making sure that you eat all your meals on time will help you curb your sugar cravings significantly.

  8. 7. Stay hydrated Many a times, your body craving for sugar is actually a sign of dehydration. To avoid sugar cravings, being hydrated can help quite a bit. A drink such as water with lemon juice and a few drops of stevia can make you feel refreshed instantly. You can also include a cup of green tea with your meals. Adding some stevia will satisfy the sugar cravings and will stop you from reaching out for dessert.

  9. 8. Include lots of greens in your meal Greens in the form of salads or green drinks give you an instant kick of energy. They also keep you feeling fuller for longer. As a result, your urge to eat processed, fried or sweetened foods will reduce almost immediately.

  10. 9. Fill in on happy hormones Sugar cravings are enhanced by the stress hormone- cortisol. On the other hand, your cravings are reduced by increasing serotonin or your happy hormones. You can do this by exercising, getting enough sleep and eating well.

  11. Think of natural substitutes Sweeteners like stevia do not have any calories. They do not spike sugar levels in the blood and are actually sweeter than sugar. If you want to make your baked goodies and still enjoy your favorite desserts, think of stevia as an alternative. Lakanto is a great alternative if you love baking. It has zero additives, zero calories and zero glycemic index, making it perfect even for those who may have issues like diabetes.
