ADRENAL GLANDS are two small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of each kidney. Each gland weighs about 4-6 g. Adrenal gland produce several hormones that are activated or released through different neural and hormonal mechanisms.

STRUCTURE OF ADRENAL GLAND There are two adrenal glands that occur a top each kidney which is why these are also called suprarenal glands. The glands are pyramid-shaped, but the exact shape might differ in different people with age and their physiological condition. The glands are enclosed in a fibrous capsule and a cushion of fat that serves to protect the gland from internal shocks.
ADRENAL GLAND • The adrenal gland is divided into two sections: the outer part known as the adrenal cortex and the inner area known as the adrenal medulla . The adrenal cortex is further divided into three regions: zona reticularis, zona fasciculata, and zona glomerulosa, each producing distinct hormones with specific functions. • The adrenal cortex is responsible for the production of mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids and androgens. These hormones play crucial roles in maintaining salt balance, metabolism regulation, and the development of secondary sexual characteristics. • In contrast, the adrenal medulla synthesizes catecholamines, which are essentially stress hormones. These hormones are secreted in response to stressful situations, often referred to as fight or flight reactions.
