  1. People have various reasons for hiding a spare key near the house. Most often, it’s because a certain family member routinely forgets their key and is often locked out. Unrecommended Hiding Places Before we examine the best hiding places, let’s first look at the ones we wouldn’t recommend: • Flowerpots: this is an obvious choice, especially when the flowerpot is close to the door. A criminal would most likely search in or under one. • Phony Rocks: these are also extremely apparent. • Mailbox: this is yet another obvious hiding place. • Under the Mat: this is the most obvious place and probably the first one a criminal would check. • In Your Purse/Wallet: this may sound like a good idea, but if someone steals your purse/wallet, they instantly have access to your home.

Recommended Hiding Places • Here are some of the best hiding places: • Outdoor Garbage Can: hiding a spare key in an outdoor garbage can works great, so long as you make sure it’s firmly attached or you remove it prior to trash day. • Garden Décor: in the garden, away from the front door, is always a good choice. Under the garden décor works best and some décor even have specialty compartments for which you can place a spare key. • Dryer Vent: dryer vents are great hiding places. Use string to tie the key. If the vent is metal, glue a magnet to the inside and simply attach the key.

  3. Bird Feeder/House: best when the feeder/house is in a tree or bush. Just make sure you don’t place the key where a feathered friend is living. • Neighbor or Friend: giving a spare key to a neighbour or friend is the safest and best place in which to keep a spare key.
