Historical Notes: • Israel taken into Assyrian captivity (722 B.C.) • Parallel to the book of Isaiah; proclaiming God’s message as Israel was being overtaken by Assyria

The Minor Prophets: Amos • About the author • Amos means “burden-bearer” • He worked as a sheepherder and gatherer of fruit (7:14-15) • Known for sense of truth and justice (not warmth) • Historical Context • ~755 B.C. (Assyrian Period: Setting the stage) • Uzziah = King of Judah / Jeroboam II = King of Israel • Major earthquake occurs within 2 years • Primary audience/subject  Northern Kingdom of Israel • Enjoying wealth and luxury • Morally, politically, religiously corrupt
