Background (Popularization of ITS Technology for Car Users in Japan) - Electronic Toll Collection System (ETC) • Approx. 20 million ETC on-board units (OBUs) have been shipped (as of August 2008). • The nationwide utilization rate: 74% (as of August 2008). Smartway 2007 – On-road Proving Tests and Demonstration on the MEXScale of Field Tests (1) Advance proving tests • Number of experimental vehicles: 14 • Test period: from January to May and September, 2007 • Test subjects: 219 people • Total trips: 1,167 (2) On-road trials (3) Trial runs of “Smartway Demo 2007” • Participating companies: • 11 automakers • 18 OBU and electronic manufacturers • 6 academic experts • Number of experimental vehicles: 40 • Test period: from May 14, 2007 • Total trips: 2,522 (as of December 10, 2007) • Trial run participants: 666 people • (including 54 from • overseas) • Questionnaire responses: 511 13

Results of Smartway 2007Results of Questionnaire Survey of Demonstration on MEX (3/3) • 59 % of participants wish to purchase ITS-OBU. • Majority of them think they will do so when replace their car If Yes, When would it be ? Would you purchase an ITS-OBU ? depends As soon as ITS-OBU is commercialized Wish to purchase it to replace ETC-OBU or car navigation system I have When replace my car Will not Have neither ETC-OBU nor car navigation system, so wish to purchase new ITS-OBU • Condition for purchase of ITS-OBU of those who answered he/she would not purchase: • If ITS-OBU is cheap (or the same price as current car-navigation systems) • If the locations of these services are expanded (deployment of DSRC antenna to nationwide) • If service contents are enrich(enhancement of preciseness of information)

Future Plans - Nationwide Deployment Plan of Smartway Services • On-road tests and trial operation will be conducted at regions throughout Japan from FY 2008 Smartway 2007 On-road tests on MEX Trial operation on MEX Operation (Three major metropolitan areas, etc.) Nationwide deployment On-road tests on three major metropolitan areas, etc Automatic fee payment at ferries, parking lots, etc. Providing information on family restaurants, convenience stores, road stations, etc. Internet connection, etc
