    Mastering the computer skills you will need in your career as an online student is a little like what Alice faced in Wonderland. You want to be adventurous, but not impetuous. Your key to success is to plan ahead and know where to get help.

    The size of your hard drive is easy to find. On a Windows 2000 or XP system: Go to the Windows Start button Left-click on My Computer

    Your operating system, CPU, and memory can be located, too. On a Windows 2000 or XP system: Go to the Windows Start button Right-click on My Computer Click on Properties

    You need external storage for your files. If your computer has USB ports, we highly recommend using a flash drive (AKA memory stick). If not, use disks. BACK-UP ALL YOUR WORK.

    Lets start with the Windows desktop. Here is an example of a folder. This is a container you can create to hold files. Always give your folders descriptive names. To open the folder, double-click on it. Inside this folder, are five files and one folder. What do you notice about the five files? (Look at the suffixes, called extensions, and sizes.)

    An automated program can check your browser to make sure it has all the features necessary for WebCT/Vista use. Follow the procedure on the next few slides to check your browser.

    Java version 1.5.0_5 is recommended for all students using WebCT/Vista. Follow the procedure on the next few slides to find out what version of Java you are running on your computer.

    Slide 36:What if my Java version doesnt match?

    If your Java is not version 1.5.0_5 but you are having no problems using WebCT, then leave well enough alone. If your Java version does not match 1.5.0_5 and you are experiencing problems with WebCT, then follow the installation instructions on the Vista Web site at http://www.valdosta.edu/vista/java/WebCTVista-Re-installingtheJRE.htm

    VSU ID Lookup Banner Login BlazeNet WebCT/Vista

    VSU ID Lookup Your VSU ID is a 9-digit number used in place of your social security number. To find it, go to the Banner Web pages at http://www.valdosta.edu/mis/banner/ Click on the VSU ID Lookup link on the right. VSU ID Lookup To locate your VSU ID number: Enter your social security number using NO dashes. Eg: 123456789 Enter your birth date with slashes and a 4-digit year. Eg: 01/02/1973 Click the Lookup ID button Banner Login Return to the Banner page and click on this link-? Use the page (as pictured below) to enter the Banner system: Enter your 9-digit VSU ID number Enter your PIN: (It consists of your birth date NO slashes and a 2-digit year.) Eg: January 2, 1973 would be this PIN: 010273 Click the Login button You will now be prompted to change your PIN to a Password Finding your BlazeNet e-mail address . . . After logging into Banner, click on the Personal Information link and follow the link named View E-mail Addresses. Your VSU E-mail address is on the line marked Preferred. This is the address received by your professors and used for all VSU functions. BlazeNet The initial 8 characters in the VSU e-mail address you found in Banner becomes your User Name on the BlazeNet login screen at http://luminis.valdosta.edu/cp/home/loginf. Web CT Vista Use this same BlazeNet name and password to log in to your Vista account at http://www.valdosta.edu/vista.

    Yes, BlazeNet and WebCT/Vista have much in common. But unlike, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, they are not identical.

    WebCT/Vista includes: Course web sites with class materials Its own e-mail and discussion systems that do not connect to BlazeNet e-mail Help tools and tutorials for WebCT users

    Slide 49:On WebCT/Vista Be aware of . . .

    In e-mail, discussions, assignments, assessments if you stop typing or clicking, the program times out (closes). Is it my computer or WebCT that is causing a problem? This is a common question. You can check the IT page for network outages and the WebCT/Vista page for problems.

    Theres a Student Help Resources link that appears on your opening menu. The Orientation and Demos are very good.

    Dont depend on the King of Hearts to come to your rescue. Familiarize yourself with as many online library resources and services as possible.

    Odum Library Interlibrary Loan GALILEO GIL

    Odum Library VSUs Odum Library staff recognizes the importance of explaining online access to its users. Note that the Services links on the home page includes Distance Education. Read through these pages at http://books.valdosta.edu/dist/dstudents.html. Interlibrary Loan As distance learning students, you have document delivery privileges through the Interlibrary Loan system called ILLiad. Use your BlazeNet e-mail login to submit requests. GALILEO GALILEO is the name given to the network of online publications, databases and Web sites available through its member libraries. You may use the GALILEO system from any computer with an Internet connection. If you are not on campus, you will be prompted for passwords. If you connect to GALILEO from your BlazeNet e-mail page, you need not enter the GALILEO password. GIL GIL is the name given to the Librarys online catalog. All passwords are accessible from the GIL homepage at https://gil.valdosta.edu/ You must enter your 9-digit VSU ID number and your last name to access the GALILEO password and other customized GIL services. The exact procedure is shown in a tutorial at http://books.valdosta.edu/read/galssncheck.html

    Microsoft provides a number of online tutorials on the Web (see next page). An introduction to using MS Word to format your papers and transfer your student files into WebCT/Vista is provided as part of the instruction in your first MLIS 7000 Foundations weekend.

    From the Microsoft Office Getting Started with page, do a search on the word tutorial. This produces a list of links to free tutorials on current and older versions of MS products including Word, Excel, And PowerPoint. Go to the File command and from the menu, select Print You will now see a Print choice box (called a dialogue box) On the Print what selection menu (lower left of the screen), highlight Handouts Click OK To print out this PowerPoint file:
