What is AP?. AP stands for Advanced Placement. It is what we used to call Advanced Courses, but more stringent. The courses are college-level courses. Why? The students take an AP test at the end of the course and can earn college credit for the course.. How else can my child get college credit?.

    1. Overview Information Expectations

    3. How else can my child get college credit? Valley View offers at present 19 hours of concurrent credit (meaning your child gets high school and college credit both for the course). Current Courses: Freshman English I and II (6 hours) College Algebra and Coll. Pre-Cal (7 hours) U.S. History to 1876 and Since 1867 (6 hours)

    4. What is Pre-AP? Pre- AP is available to equip mid high-school students with the strategies to engage in higher-level thinking skills. Statistics show that students that have participated in the Pre-AP courses are more successful in the AP courses in both their grades and scores!!!

    5. Why take AP/Pre-AP courses? Get a head start on college-level work Improve your writing and problem-solving skills Earn weighted credit---AP only

    6. Many students are interested in weighted credit? What is that? Weighted credit allows students to earn over a 4.0 grade point average. For each letter grade earned you get the upper amount of quality points: A=5 points B=4 points C=3 points D=2 points F=0 points

    7. Also, FYI To be an honor graduate, students must have two weighted courses. Effective with the Class of 2011 and beyond, students must have three weighted courses to be an honor graduate.

    8. Do I have to take the AP test? The AP test is given to the students in late April or early May depending upon their course. At this time, the state is paying for the test. However, if they miss the scheduled test, there is a make-up test and there is a fee that the student will have to pay. The test is optional. But, if the students do not take the test, they will not receive weighted credit.

AP World History This is a survey course in world history from pre-history to present day (cultures, people, religious ideologies, political, economic, and social systems that shaped our world) Understanding and connecting cause and effect Students must be willing to read many primary and secondary sources Readings and text are on a post-secondary level Students should be able to write different types of essays such as comparison and contrast, change over time, and document based essays Summer Reading Requirements: Guns, Germs, and Steel by Diamond The World is Flat by Friedman Nectar in a Sieve by Markandaya The Prince by Machiavelli

AP United States History This class will require more in-depth study In this class, there will be notes, outlines, and a multiple-choice reading every week 1st 2 weeks of school, there will be essay tests over the summer reading. (This will be of their 1st 9 weeks grade) Summer Reading Declaration of Independence The U.S. Constitution Common Sense by Thomas Paine Uncle Toms Cabin by Stowe The Jungle by Sinclair Black Boy by Wright

    14. AP English Language (11th grade) There is a summer reading list, consisting of 5 books. It is recommended that students take Pre-AP. Students complete 10 book reports throughout the year. Students have weekly essays due on various topics. You will need the workbook, 5 Steps to a 5: AP English Language workbook

    15. AP English Literature (12th grade) There is a short summer reading list. The student must have scored proficient or advanced on the EOC Literacy Exam. There is a great deal of essay writing over the literature we read. Good writing skills are a must. Research paper over a novel of the students choosing. Book discussion groups

    16. AP Chemistry This course will be rigorous and demand much time and effort from the students. There will be at least 3 required Night Labs. Students should have successfully completed Chemistry I (B or better). There will be some required summer work. (Quizzes will be given that will count for 20% of the first 9 weeks grade over this work)---Teacher will give out this handout at the end of the year. Students should have a TI83 or better calculator.

    17. AP Calculus Course is comparable to Calculus I in college. Students must have completed 4 years of mathematics (Alg. I, Geom., Alg. II, and Pre-Cal Trig. Or College Pre-Cal). Must have a TI-83 or TI-84 calculator. Must be familiar with the properties of functions, the algebra of functions and the graphs of functions. Students will be assessed by group grades, participation grades, homework grades, and by individual tests.

    18. AP Statistics There will be daily homework. At the beginning of the chapter, the students assignment will consist of reading the chapter and doing vocabulary to become familiar with the information. Mid-Chapter- the assignments consist of quizzes and homework problems. Exams-They are given at the end of each chapter. They consist of multiple-choice and free response to model the AP Test. Activities-Normally there are 2 per chapter and the write-ups are class participation points.

    19. AP Art Studio Must have a B or higher in Art I. The student must keep a sketch book and a drawing is due weekly worth 100 points. For every one hour in class, the student should spend two hours outside of class. The students must be willing to research art movements, artists, and art periods. Students should be disciplined and committed to their art.
