J. Sansom • Person I’d Like to Meet: John Wayne • Favorite Book Character: Scarlett O’Hara • Music: Classical, Instrumental, Country • Traveled to: England, France, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Israel, Brazil, Mexico, Bahamas, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and, of course, the US (about 38 states) • Something most people don’t know about me: • I climbed the Great Wall of China! • I’ve scuba-dived with sharks. • I’ve raised cattle. • I co-authored and edited a published book. • I am now a 3-time Mustang.

Grading • Report card access – on www.Edline.net • Grading: • Tests/Projects: 50% • Quizzes/Assignments Designated for Quiz Grade: 30% • Class Work/Homework: 20% • Other means of evaluation • Portfolios – track your work to see your growth • Your Effort & Participation • On-Time Turn-In of Assignments • Requests for help/tutoring • Late-work Policy • 1 day late – 20% deduction • 2 days late – 50% deduction • Work will NOT be accepted more than 1 week after due date

  8. Assignments • All assignments must be completed on schedule • Late work will not be tolerated • There will be NO zeros in this class; they are not an option • If you need help, come to me! Please!!!!

Absence Policy/Make-Up Work • Daily Work (Classwork & Homework) – Go online to Edline and www.LisaTafoya.com for assignments and check the green handout wall folders upon your return for extra handouts • 1-2 days absent – due the day after you return • 3 or more days – discuss due date with me • If you know in advance you will be absent, tell me and I will give you the assignment before you leave • Due upon your return • Tests & Projects/Quizzes • If absent the day before a test/project due date, you are responsible for taking that test if it was announced prior to absence • If new material was presented the day before, you may make up the test at an agreed upon time • Standard make-up day for English is Thursday each week

Daily Routine • Daily 5 Minute Warm-Up Activity • Enter class, get materials, sit down • Begin warm-up immediately (on board) • Be in your seat when the bell rings • Transition to Daily Lesson • Goal and Objectives on Board • Questions & Closing Discussion • Homework Assignments • 2 to 3 a week to reinforce learning • I release you, not the bell • All assignments must be completed on schedule • Late work will not be tolerated

Classroom Policies – General • ID Badge ON – hanging around neck • Be on time and be ready in your seat when the bell rings • Bring all necessary supplies every day – Binder and Journal are essentials every day • Pick-up handouts, check board and begin work immediately • No leaving classroom during tests • Only bottled water is allowed – no other drinks, food, or gum • Homework – If I assign it, you do it! • Keep all graded work in binder • Bathroom/water – you have 7 passes for all year; use them wisely – once gone, no more to be issued; write your name on the back of each one now • Keep desks aligned straight unless we move them for groups

Classroom Policies (Cont.) • Phone OFF and put away in backpacks – no music, no games, no texting unless I specifically allow it • Classroom Management 1st – Verbal Reminder 2nd – Verbal Reminder/Discussion as warranted 3rd time – E-mail/Call home 4th– Referral to office • I dismiss you, not the bell • Sit in assigned seats • Tutoring – Standard Times or by Appointment or go to another English I teacher • 8:20 to 8:50 M, T, W, Th, F • 4:15 to 4:45 Th • By appointment

  13. Academic Integrity • Cheating and/or plagiarism are unacceptable and will result in no credit on the assignment • Honor code must be upheld at all times • You are receiving a copy – read it, sign it, and have your parents do the same • Due no later than: Friday Aug. 29

Tonight, Think About... • What career you hope to have some day. • Can be realistic, far-reaching yet realistic, or just far-reaching. • Do some research on what you have to do to get that job – education, prerequisite jobs, etc. Write this down! • Consider your strengths and weaknesses as a student – write these down too.

  19. Resume & Cover Letter • Research! – What does it take to get there? Education? Other jobs? • Add some spice! – What interesting things do you want to do along the way? Write a book? Learn a new language? • Do some good! – Volunteer work is important! Consider skills developed through community service

Functional: Skills-Based Resume • Emphasizes your strengths and skills • Includes past responsibilities, accomplishments, and skills • Organized into categories such as • Educational Background • Work Experience • Awards & Honors • Volunteer Work • Skills • Include a brief statement of tasks performed and responsibilities assumed under each category.

Format – Follow a Template! • OBJECTIVE: Outline what your ultimate goal is – in 1 sentence • EDUCATION: List your degrees, majors, minors, and the school/schools where you received them • WORK EXPERIENCE: List job titles, names of employing organizations, and dates of employment, as well as descriptions of what you did on the job • VOLUNTEER WORK: List community service, dates of service, and work performed • HONORS/AWARDS: List any honors or awards and the dates received • SKILLS AND/OR ACHIEVEMENTS: Focus on your major areas of strength. Use skills categories such as Communication, Language, Computer, etc. Demonstrate how you achieved those skills by using action verbs to give concrete examples

Requirements • Times New Roman font - size of 10-12pt • One-inch margins  • One page in length ONLY • Print your resume on GOOD paper! • Draft and/or revise your resume to fit the specific qualifications of the position for which you are applying.  • Correct grammar is absolutely essential! • SPELL CHECK! • Proofread – MANY times! • Have other people check for ANY errors A typical recruiter initially scans a resume for ONLY 30 seconds. Keep your resume neat, clean, and simple.

  23. Cover Letter • Step 1: Personalize your cover letter • At the top: • Add a personal letterhead. • Note the date. • Write recipient’s name and address. • Greet recipient or write “To Whom It May Concern:”

Cover Letter • Step 2: Tell the employer why you are writing to them • In the first paragraph, state the position for which you are applying. • Step 3: Match your qualifications to the requirements • In the second paragraph, make your qualifications jump out by outlining and emphasizing your strengths. Explain how your strengths will help accomplish the job at hand. • Step 4: Motivate the employer to action • In the closing paragraph, include a positive statement to stimulate interest and urge them to take action. • Specify your availability for an interview.

  25. Closing • Thank the reader for their consideration and time. • Write a professional sign off, such as “Sincerely,” or “Respectfully,”

Project Due Date/Details • Due Tuesday 9/2/14 at the beginning of class • You may turn in paper copies of the resume and cover letter or you may e-mail it to me to lisa.tafoya@risd.org • I will give you some time to work on this in class this week, but the majority will be done on your own • This project will represent your 3rd quiz grade • Grading Rubric – to be handed out in class • Be prepared to be called on to respond to some interview questions in class as part of your project
