  1. An Introduction to Types of Red Wine for Dummies

  2. Red wine is a type of wine made from dark-colored grape varieties. The actual color of the wine can range from intense violet, typical of young wines, through to brick red for mature wines and brown for older red wines. The juice from most purple grapes is greenish-white, the red color coming from anthocyan pigments (also called anthocyanins) present in the skin of the grape; exceptions are the relatively uncommon teinturier varieties, which produce a red-colored juice. Much of the red-wine production process therefore involves extraction of color and flavor components from the grape skin. It is a delicacy around the world.

  4. Types of Red Wine

  5. Merlot This is a wine which, became famous for its pairing with Cabernet Sauvignon, but in recent years has made a name for itself as an easy drinking red wine famous for notes of plum, and even chocolate… yum! It offers a friendly wine for a novice, but also has made many vineyards renowned amongst the snobbiest of wine snobs. Image Source: https://www.delish.com/

  6. Cabernet Sauvignon As mentioned previously, this wine was used for a long time in its Blends with Merlot. Since then Cabernet sauvignon has worked it’s way all over the world. This wine tends to be more tannic (or bitter) while still balancing these tannins with deep fruit, and green pepper notes. These forces compliment each other in the stylistic way only a cabernet sauvignon can, making it a favorite at a number of wine tastings. Image Source: https://www.delish.com/

  7. Pinot Noir Pinot noir has quickly became one of the biggest types of red wine since its use in famous films. Pinot noir is characterized by its versatility. It is praised by sommeliers in its wines from France, and drank by all in it’s more fruit forward less bourgeois options in California and Oregon. Image Source: https://www.delish.com/

  8. Malbec Malbec has reached out from its humble beginnings in the French countryside to become a household name. Malbec gained its popularity after its introduction to Argentina. Sipping a malbec from anywhere in the world, you get the approachability of a merlot, but with a slight spicy ruggedness reminiscent of jagged argentinian mountains. 9. Zinfandel Zinfandel is an interesting wine because the taste can really vary based on where it's grown, though it's usually nice and juicy and high in alcohol content. Imagine juicy, spicy strawberries that get you smashed. Image Source: https://www.delish.com/

  10. Syrah/Shiraz Called Syrah in France and other European countries, and Shiraz in Australia, South America, and elsewhere, this wine is just plain fun to sip on—it can be peppery, spicy, and bold, with the flavor of rich fruits like blackberry. Break this one out after a long day when you want to sit with a book and a glass of wine and really taste something. Image Source: https://www.delish.com/
