Year of Data-Driven Support for Students EdIndia Foundations collaboration with MCGM in building systems for placing students at the heart of decision-making It’s often said that meaningful change doesn’t typically happen overnight. Our journey and work with Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, and contributes directly to the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), has shown us that, the change requires committed people, a common purpose and the willingness to how a system can serve the beneficiaries. Through data-driven collaboration of our Data Analytics Support Program and shared goals, we’ve seen how powerful and impactful it is when decisions are made not just for students, but with their learning at the very heart of the process. At Sterlite EdIndia Foundation, we have always felt that systems are important, but so does the intent. Our collaboration wasn’t just about creating dashboards or technology tools. It was about using those tools carefully, so that every data point could eventually be transitioned into timely action for a child, in a classroom. From understanding admissions and teacher placements to identifying learners needing academic interventions, our goal was to help provide clarity and purposeful direction for decision makers who are influencing the everyday schooling experience of over 1 lakh learners in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools.
One of the most impactful steps in this journey was building the Teacher Transfer Portal. This system enabled smoother and more transparent placements of educators, ensuring the right teacher could reach the right classroom at the right time. As of today, 196 teachers have been successfully transferred using this platform. But more than a number, this represents stories, of teachers finding the right fit and students finding better support. Since June 2024, our work on student performance monitoring was another a breakthrough moment. The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) student Dashboard has helped schools identify low-performing students from a pool of more than 11,000 learners which allowed MCGM to launch targeted remedial classes, interventions that could make the difference between a student falling behind or finding their feet again. In the M East Ward, where students were preparing for competitive scholarships, we co-developed a dashboard that tracked every aspirant’s performance. The impact of this targeted support has been significant. While only 3 students secured scholarships in the first year, this number increased to 33 in 2022-23 and reached 75 in 2023-24. This close monitoring ensured that 100% of the students received focused preparation based on mock test results, something that might not have been possible without timely data and responsive planning. With the system now well-integrated, we await the 2024-25 outcomes, anticipating that the momentum built over the past years will continue to reflect in even stronger results. Our partnership also enabled the smooth roll-out of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) assessments, covering over 40,000 Class 1 students across four cycles. EdIndia designed tools for
seamless data collection and dashboard visualization, helping academic teams quickly understand what’s working, where students are struggling, and how support systems need to respond. And in a system as large as Mumbai, managing school infrastructure and admissions is no small feat. The School Infrastructure Status Dashboard supported planning for over 400 schools, while our admission tracking dashboard helped MCGM enroll more than 1 lakh new students, 25% ahead of the planned timeline. These tools made it easier for the system to be agile and student-first in its decision-making. As we reflect on the so far, we are reminded that data is not just numbers, its stories yearning to be told, children yearning to be known, and educators waiting to be guided. And more than that, at its best, it can bring systems closer to students. At Sterlite EdIndia Foundation, we remain committed to this approach. We believe the role of a partner is not just to bring in tools, but to listen, co-create, and stay responsive to the unique needs of a system and its people. The past year with MCGM has been a testament to what’s possible when collaboration meets purpose.
