Books@Ovid Access Points • Books@Ovid can be used in three ways… • Linking – Jumpstarts can be used to link into individual books from Catalogues or home pages • Browsing – alphabetically by title, or by subject; opening a book and browsing the structure, which may include volumes, divisions, chapters, parts and pages • Searching – Once you have opened Books@Ovid, Natural language searching is the default, but any other field may be searched, either alone or in combination

  4. Browsing Books@Ovid • Browsing by Title – titles beginning with D for example… • Browsing by Subject – alphabetically by subject using preset categories, a book may fall into more than one category • Browse special books from Header

Book Searching Searching Books@Ovid... • From the Browse Books Screen • Natural Language Searching is the default • To search a single book – open a book then search “Current Book” (or all books) • Or search all books directly using “Quick Search” • From the Main Search Screen • Natural Language Searching is the default • But fielded searching for Keyword, Author etc. are also available • Limit to Book(s) to restrict searching to a book or group of books

  20. Natural Language Searching • Ovid Natural Language uses four steps to help you search Ovid Books more thoroughly: • Natural Language analysis • Synonym Expansion • Passage Searching • Relevance Ranking

Natural Language Analysis & Synonym Expansion • Ovid filters to eliminate irrelevant terms and expands each concept using word variants taken from a proprietary medical lexicon. • Obtain best results by: • Stating your question as concisely as possible • Using nouns more than verbs • Avoiding common spelling errors – Spell Check • When searching Books@Ovid, the software automatically expands your query: • Singular and plural forms of your search terms (truncation ) • Strong synonyms from a lexicon • Hyponyms (car is a hyponym of vehicle) • Acronyms (like an abbreviation) • Alternative spellings (British or US English)

  22. Passage Searching & Relevance Ranking • Search results involve passages of text which include your search terms (and/or their synonyms). The closer the terms are to one another, the more relevant the results are likely to be. • Star Scores indicate how relevant passages are to your question. • ***** All search concepts are present and complete • **** All concepts are present but some are incomplete • *** One concept is missing • ** Two concepts are missing • * More than two concepts are missing

Author Searching • Author Icon m-auth – multiple authors… automatically truncated, includes • Author The person(s) credited with writing the book (usually on the spine) • Chapter Authors Contributors to a chapter or part of a book • Book Editors The person(s) credited with editing the book (usually in the front matter) These are also separately searchable

New and Enhanced Features • QuickSearch from Browsing Page • More links back to Browse Books • Search terms highlighted (yellow/red) in text and passages (search terms and synonyms) • Location highlighted (green) in Table of Contents • Table of Contents highlighting wraps around open book section • Selecting within the Front of Book, TOC or Back of Book resets TOC highlighting and text frame (and crumbtrail beneath book title) • Frame control allows suppression of the Title, Search and TOC displays • Reference display shows citation and link(s) • Limit to Book – limits search result to one (or more) book(s) • Optional “Terms included in Search” link shows terms used by NL searching • Optional special books links in header • Print Selection icons to quickly display and print passages • Term Lookups show definitions when clicked
