  2. Description This CBL will provide you with information and tips for using the Nursing@Ovid. This course has 23 slides and should take 15-20 minutes to complete. It is followed by a 10 question post-test. Last reviewed: 05/2009

  3. Objectives Upon completion of this module, the participant will: 1. Understand what information is included in Nursing@Ovid. 2. Understand how to execute a search in Nursing@Ovid. 3. Understand how to apply limits in Nursing@Ovid.

  4. What is Nursing@Ovid • Nursing@Ovid is a database, with abstracts, that contains more than 400,000 records in the field of nursing • Supplemented by Ovid with over 1,000 new records added each week • Focuses on core specialties for the nurse in practice, education, research, and administration • Also includes proprietary controlled vocabulary that, along with an associated nursing lexicon, meets the specific needs of nursing and allied health professionals of all types • Designed so that it can search additional databases, including CINAHL and PubMed

  5. Accessing Nursing@Ovid • You will find a link to Nursing@Ovid under Quick Links on the Health Science Library’s home page http://library.luhs.org • You can access it directly on campus or from off campus. An Archer ID is required for off campus access.

  6. Planning a Search • Develop your question • Divide the question into important searchable concepts • Search each concept separately and then combine • Do not search general terms, like “effects” or “results” Example: Coping with leukemia

  7. Searching Nursing@Ovid • On the Nursing@Ovid search screen, enter the first concept for your question • Nursing@Ovid will map the term or phrase to the most appropriate subject heading

  8. Searching Nursing@Ovid • Check the box in front of the most appropriate heading • Any term you select will automatically be exploded to include all narrower terms.

  9. Searching Nursing@Ovid • The search term is posted to the Search History. In this example, the search will retrieve articles about Leukemia • Repeat the above steps for each concept

Search History Search statements, search results, and search types are posted in the Search History Window • Combine search statements by clicking the checkbox near each desired entry, then applying Boolean operators using the AND or OR buttons. • Delete search statements by selecting the desired search statement numbers, then clicking the Remove Selected button.

  11. Limiting Your Results Use Limits to focus your search results • Common limits are listed under the search box. • Select Additional Limits to view all available limits

  12. Limiting Your Results Using Additional Limits: • Select a search statement from the search history • Select the limits you want • Click the Limit a Search button

  13. Search Results Display • Search Aid: • Shows the terms used to retrieve the records in the display • Provides a way to narrow the search results to Point of Care, Training and Development, etc.

  14. Search Results Display Citing Articles lets you connect quickly to a display of articles that cite the article of a record

  15. Search Results Display Complete Reference takes you to the full record of the citation Full Text will take you to the electronic version of the article, if available Library Holdings will take you to the library’s catalog, Pegasus View Abstract allows you to view abstracts inline, without causing a page refresh or navigation to a different page.

Search Results Display • Some citations will have a link to electronic articles • PDF full text: articles with same pagination and format as the print version • HTML full text: article without pagination • To see if the Health Sciences Library owns, go to the library homepage and click on Find a Journal

  17. Results Manager B C A D E • With the Results Manager, you can • A. Select a set of records • B. Apply pertinent field information to record output • C. Select options to format your record • D. Include Search History with your record • E. Choose an action: Display, Print Preview, Email, Save

  18. Additional Searching • Nursing@Ovid allows the user to search multiple databases. This is called Universal searching. • The results of the Universal Searches are displayed behind each source tab. At Loyola, these tabs are Cinahl & Pubmed.

  21. Personal Accounts Personal Accounts allow you to create a private workspace for your saved search strategies, AutoAlerts and record annotations. Nursing@Ovid will prompt you to login when you select Save Search Historyor Saved Searches/Alerts, but you can log into your account at any time by selecting the Personal Accountlink located toward the top right of any Nursing@Ovid main search page.
