  1. E. Special Movements at Diarthroses 1. In addition to previous movements there are several special movements because they only occur at certain locations 2. Elevation- upward movement of any part of the body 3. Depression- downward movement of any part of the body

  2. 4. Protraction – movement of a joint in a plane that is parallel to the ground a. can be forward back or right left 5. Retraction- movement of a protracted part of the body backward on a plane parallel to the ground a. Can only occur after protraction

  3. 6. Most only refer to foot and hand a. Inversion is the movement of soles of the foot medially so that the soles face each other b. Eversion is the movement of the sole laterally so that the soles face away from each other c. Dorsiflexion involves the bending of the foot in the dorsal direction

  4. d. Plantarflexion involves bending of foot downward or plantar surface e. Supination is a movement of the forearm in which the palm of the hand is turned anteriorly or superiorly f. Pronation is a movement of the forearm in which the palm is turned posteriorly or inferiorly
