  1. NIH GRANT PREPARATION WORKSHOP: A workshop for new investigators about putting together administrative portions of a grant and the NIH review panel. Tuesday, October 11 Presenters: Kate Petcosky-Kulkarni, BUSM Office of Proposal Development Renna Lilly, Office of Sponsored Programs Carter Cornwall, Study Section Reviewer

  2. BUSM Office of Proposal Development Planning Stages • Contact sponsors to obtain background information, confirm eligibility criteria, and clarify guidelines/policies to ensure proposals prepared and submitted are administratively compliant and address programmatic priorities as described in funding announcement Proposal Development and Review • Assist in the preparation of budgets and budget justifications • Complete administrative components of application and internal documents • Track all proposal tasks, including those assigned to collaborators at other institutions, to ensure that these tasks are completed and gathered in a timely manner to include in the application • Review the final proposal to verify that all required components are complete, have been formatted correctly and adhere to sponsor guidelines • Submit complete and final application to BU OSP for final review, approval, and submission

  3. BUSM Departments, Sections and Centers Currently Supported by OPD • Anatomy & Neurobiology • Rheumatology/Arthritis Center • Biochemistry • Biomedical Genetics • Cancer Center • Computational Biomedicine • CReM • Endocrinology • Framingham Heart Study • Graduate Medical Sciences • Microbiology • NEIDL • Neurology • Ophthalmology • Pathology • Pharmacology • Physiology & Biophysics • Preventive Medicine • Psychiatry • Pulmonary Center • Surgery • Vascular Biology • VA

  4. Tips to keep in mind when planning a submission 1. You are not alone-putting together a grant is a team effort • PI: working/editing science, finalizing details with collaborators • Dept Admin and/or OPD: developing budget, completing admin sections, completing/routing internal documents, uploading pieces into application, routing to OSP • OSP: conducts final review and submission of application* *all applications for external funding need to be approved by OSP prior to submission 2. Plan ahead- New OSP submission policy • Do you have a subcontract? Consultants? Collaborators? Additional paperwork is required from them which takes time 3. Discuss your project with your Dept. chief/chair - They need to approve it before OSP can submit, especially if there is a proposed cost-share, require additional space….etc 4. Discuss your application with colleagues- They can be great resource for boiler plate information (resources, equipment, data sharing…etc) and help critique your science

  5. NIH Changes as of 1/25/2016 • Rigor & Transparency • New Attachment- Authentication of Key Biological and/or Chemical Resources • Vertebrate Animals • Definition of a child

  6. Rigor & Transparency Significance • Describe the scientific premise for the proposed project, including consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of published research or preliminary data crucial to the support of your application. Approach • Describe the experimental design and methods proposed and how they will achieve robust and unbiased results. • Explain how relevant biological variables, such as sex, are factored into research designs and analyses for studies in vertebrate animals and humans. For example, strong justification from the scientific literature, preliminary data, or other relevant considerations, must be provided for applications proposing to study only one sex.

  7. Authentication of Key Biological and/or Chemical Resources Briefly describe methods to ensure the identity and validity of key biological and/or chemical resources used in the proposed studies. Key biological and/or chemical resources may or may not be generated with NIH funds and: 1) may differ from laboratory to laboratory or over time; 2) may have qualities and/or qualifications that could influence the research data; and 3) are integral to the proposed research. These include, but are not limited to, cell lines, specialty chemicals, antibodies, and other biologics. Standard laboratory reagents that are not expected to vary do not need to be included in the plan. Information in this section must focus only on authentication and/or validation of key resources to be used in the study; all other methods and preliminary data must be included within the page limits of the research strategy.

  8. Vertebrate Animals Updated guidance on criteria to be addressed : • A description of veterinary care is no longer required • Justification for the number of animals has been eliminated • A description and justification of the method of euthanasia is required only if the method is not consistent with AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals

  9. Definition of a Child NIH is redefining the age of a child for the purposes of NIH's inclusion policy to individuals under 18 years old, instead of under 21 years old.
