    2. As you probably know, the Financial Aid Office is the most misunderstood and confusing departments on any college or university campus. First of all there is a whole other language. In order to even be eligible for Financial Aid you need to: File the FAFSA Which requires you AGI Then you receive the SAR While the school receives the ISIR Which tells you your EFC And depending on the COA You find out what the BL is And a lot of people think this is a pain in the BUTT. The Financial Aid Federal Methodology for awarding aid has even been called Federal Mythology. As you probably know, the Financial Aid Office is the most misunderstood and confusing departments on any college or university campus. 6. Defining Leadership Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential. What is Leadership? According to Warren Bennis "Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential." A simple definition of leadership is leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. So ultimately - leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes, such as their beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and skills (all of the characteristics that were listed previously). - Seek to identify personal goals, motives, insecurities, strengths and weaknesses - You must have a commitment to the profession and/or organization, not just to yourself. 7. Power vs. Leadership Power does not make you a leader it simply makes you BOSS. Leadership differs it makes people want to follow. How many of you are the DIRECTORS in your office? If you are in a position of power it does not automatically make you a leader. It simply gives you authority over others. You want to become a leader in the sense that people want or desire to follow you and are not simply doing so because you are the boss or in charge. A Boss tells others what to do A leader shows that it can be done leading by example To QUOTE Theodore Roosevelt: People ask the difference between a leader and a boss. The leader leads, and the boss drives." How many of you are the DIRECTORS in your office? If you are in a position of power it does not automatically make you a leader. It simply gives you authority over others.

    8. Leadership Style Know Yourself Know Your Crowd Know Your Situation Communicate When thinking about what type or style your leadership may be we want you to focus on 4 factors. Knowing yourself Knowing your crowd or your audience Knowing what type of situation you are in And knowing how to best communicate in that given situation. When thinking about what type or style your leadership may be we want you to focus on 4 factors.

    9. Know YOURSELF Before we can lead others, we must first learn to lead ourselves. ~ John Maxwell The man on top of the mountain didnt fall there. ~ Unknown Before we can lead others, we must first learn to lead ourselves. - John Maxwell Before we can lead others, we must first learn to lead ourselves. - John Maxwell

    10. Know YOURSELF What are your strengths? What do you value? What makes you tick? Do you act or react? What are you good at? What can you be counted on to achieve? What needs improving? What is your approach to communication? How are you motivated? Knowing yourself is the first step. How do you get to know yourself?? Think about. What are your strengths? What do you value? What makes you tick? Do you act or react? What are you good at? Natural talents? Know yourself and seek self-improvement - In order to know yourself, you must understand your own attributes. You may continually strengthen your attributes by seeking self-improvement. This often starts with being aware of what you are good at already what is your approach to communication and how are you motivated? This can be accomplished through self-study, formal classes, reflection, and interacting with others. Leadership is as much about yourself as it is those you are leading. Seek to identify personal goals, motives, insecurities, strengths and weaknesses. You must have a commitment to the profession and/or organization, not just to yourself. 11. Know your CROWD The secret of many a mans success in the world resides in his insight into the moods of men and his tact in dealing with them. ~ JG Holland The secret of many a mans success in the world resides in his insight into the moods of men and his tact in dealing with them. -JG Holland We must lead for the benefit of others not for the enrichment of ourselves - Unknown The secret of many a mans success in the world resides in his insight into the moods of men and his tact in dealing with them. -JG Holland We must lead for the benefit of others not for the enrichment of ourselves - Unknown

    12. Know your CROWD Who is your crowd? What are their strengths? What do they value? What makes them tick? Do they act or react? What can they be counted on to achieve? What needs improving? What is their approach to communication? How are they motivated? Know who your crowd or audience is who are you leading? Who are your followers?? What are their strengths? What do they value? How are they motivated? It is important to be aware that different people require different styles of leadership. For example, an employee who is more experienced requires less supervision than a new employee. A person who lacks motivation requires a different approach than one with a high degree of motivation. You must know your crowd! The fundamental starting point is having a good understanding of your followers, such as their needs, emotions, and especially their motivation. 13. Know your SITUATION A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. ~ John C. Maxwell A leader leads by example, whether he intends to or not. ~ Unknown If you command wisely you will be obeyed cheerfully - Thomas Fuller If you command wisely you will be obeyed cheerfully - Thomas Fuller

    14. Know your SITUATION Who are you trying to lead? What are you trying to get them to do? How can you be a role model? What style of leadership can you apply? What do you hope to achieve? How will you reach your desired outcome? Do you have a time frame to meet? Keep in mind that all situations are different. What you do in one situation will not always work in another. You must use your judgment in every situation to decide the best course of action and the leadership style needed. For example, you may need to confront an employee for inappropriate behavior, but if the confrontation is too harsh or too weak, too late or too early - then the results may prove ineffective. Various forces will affect these factors such as your relationship with your coworkers or employees, the skill of your people, the informal leaders within your organization, and how your office may be organized.Keep in mind that all situations are different. 15. COMMUNICATE A good leader inspires people to have the confidence in the leader, a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves. ~Unknown A great leaders courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position. ~ John C. Maxwell

    16. COMMUNICATE Is there a message to portray? What direction will you give? How will you role model? How will you respond to objections/pushback? How will you handle different perspectives or opinions? How will you get them to follow? When you lead it requires two way communication. A lot of the communication you portray is nonverbal. For example when you are the role model that lets your crowd know that you would not ask them to perform anything that you, yourself, are not willing to do. How and what you communicate either strengthens or hinders the relationship between you and your followers. How will you get them to follow? When you lead it requires two way communication. And, whether you are a team member or the team LEADER remember that you can enhance each persons self-esteem by acknowledging and encouraging behavior that is consistent with his or her temperament (or color).

    36. Varying Your Leadership Style EMPATHIZE - Know Yourself - Know Your Crowd - Know Your Situation - Communicate Now you all should know a little more about YOURSELF and what temperament you are. Realize now that you all have your own filter through which you view yourself and your world. Each persons filter includes your TEMPERMANT COLOR along with all of the experiences, education, and values you have acquired throughout your lifetime. Next when you are leading - remember the value of EMPATHY and the fact that not everyone out there is exactly like YOU! There are 3 other colors! ? It is OK to have different filters and we need to remember that - that is OK. Then - we need to recognize the situation and remember that we want to better understand where others are coming from so we can be better LEADERS in all we do. And lastly when we COMMUINCATE with our followers there is to be no judging or trying to change them or attack their views but rather make an attempt to UNDERSTAND as much as we can about how another person may be looking at the same situation or idea. It is important to ask questions and to LISTEN to the responses as well when communicating as LEADERS. Now you all should know a little more about YOURSELF and what temperament you are. 45. Leadership is action, not position. ~ D.H. McGannon In closing, Id like to say that I believe everyone is a leader in some way or another. As FA professionals you make a difference. An old man walked up a shore littered with thousands of starfish, beached and dying after a storm. A young man was picking them up and flinging them back into the ocean. Why do you bother? the old man scoffed. Youre not saving enough to make a difference. The young man picked up another starfish and sent it spinning back to the water. Made a difference to that one, he said. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE EVERY DAY in students lives in their pursuit of their higher educational dreams! Whatever you are, be a good one.
