Programme Features • ‘Preferred Graduate’ Development Programme (PGDP) is a summer internship programme organized by the Careers & Placement Services Section of PolyU’s Student Affairs Office. • Students taking the role as “Consulting Trainee” during the internship • A consulting team grouped by 4 to 6 students (International and Hong Kong students) • Period: 1-30 June, 2009 • City: Qingdao, China

Intended Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the internship, students are expected to have: • Gained insights about business environment in China • Gained exposure to Chinese corporate culture and practical experience of working in large corporations • Applied knowledge and skills gained in university to deal with business problems or challenges, and through which, generated new ideas, conducted some focused research and analysis, practised problem-solving, interpersonnel and professional communication skills, and developed presentation and report etc.

  4. Qingdao Quick Fact about Qingdao • Qingdao is located on the south facing coast of the Shandong Peninsula. • Host of the sailing events for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad • Language: Mandarin and English

  5. Quick Fact about Qingdao • Qingdao is now a manufacturing centre • A major seaport, naval base, and industrial center. It is also the site of the Tsingtao Brewery. • A combination of Chinese- German style buildings are well preserved in the city centre  Beer Festival in Qingdao

A sparkling combination • Students will form in groups of 4-6 from different disciplines and nationalities. • Each student can contribute his/her strengths and skills to the project. • Together all will develop teamwork, problem-solving skills, cultural awareness, interpersonal effectiveness …

Topics of the consulting projects You may explore the company business in areas such as: • Examples of projects: • How to increase the market share by identifying purchase behaviour and patterns of current and potential customers? • How to reduce costings and improve efficiency through a review of company operation and structure? Benchmarking Marketing Strategy Finance Competitive Analysis Business Operations Logistics Database management Customer behaviour

  11. What’s special? A boundless experience • Students will be exposed to the various departments to have a comprehensive understanding regarding the organization structure, work flow, business development etc., giving them a brand new and vivid experience.

Project Implementation Opening Ceremony / First meeting with employers Student Selection Process Project Implementation Under the mentor’s* instruction Students will be assigned to different projects. One project will be handled by a group of 4-5.   18. Arrangement of Support (1) Allowance and Remuneration • As the internship is considered a training opportunity, most employers will not be providing any allowance and remuneration. (2) Housing and Meals • Students live in double rooms at an on-campus guest house or downtown service apartment. Each room is air-conditioned and has a telephone and television. No kitchen facilities are available. (Arrangement will be made by PolyU) • If students choose to arrange the housing by themselves, please inform us by 30th April. • Students may have their meals at the on-campus cafeteria (if available) or at local restaurants.

Arrangement of Support (3) Estimated Expenses • Depending on your personal spending habits, you may spend more or less than what is listed below. *You may opt to follow the guided tour visits/cultural activities during weekend (4) Visa • PolyU will provide all the necessary documents for assisting you to apply for the entry visa into China
