    1. SAVING THE SELMAN RANCH: COLUMBIAN SHARP-TAILED GROUSE HABITAT Zeb Crofts

    2. Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse Native to central and northern North America. Characterized by darker gray plumage, spotting on the throat, and narrower underside markings. Smallest of seven recognized subspecies of sharp-tailed grouse.Smallest of seven recognized subspecies of sharp-tailed grouse.

    3. Habitat Important source of food for Native Americans and early settlers. Originally occupied 21 states and 8 Canadian Provinces. In less than 100 years has been extirpated from 8 states and has been reduced in southern range because of over-hunting and huge habitat loss. Once the most abundant game bird in the intermountain region, the Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse is now found in only 3 metapopulations, equaling less than 10% of historic range. 5. The Nature Conservancy A global organization determined to preserve plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

    6. Conservation By Design A Science Based Approach. Based on the best available scientific information, The Nature Conservancy sets long-term goals for the abundance and geographic distribution of species and ecological systems necessary to ensure the long-term survival of all biodiversity on Earth. Key Analytical Methods The Nature Conservancy applies our science-based conservation approach in multiple scales to reflect patterns in nature as well as socio-political and economic realities. To do this, we use three complementary analytical methods: global habitat assessments, ecoregional assessments and conservation action planning.

    7. TNC & The Selman Ranch: Conservation Easement. Conservation Easement- legally binding agreement that prohibits certain types of development from taking place on the land. 6,700 acres of ranchland in Cache County. Price Tag?? $3.7 million. Important because Utah is loosing 15,000 acres of open space to development each year. At this rate, Utahs populated Wasatch Front Corridor will sprawl over 308 square miles by 2030, roughly the size of New York City.Important because Utah is loosing 15,000 acres of open space to development each year. 8. Partners Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Landowner Incentive Program Federal Grant Program Awarded to states individually. UDWR wrote a grant resulting in funds being allocated to TNC $1.2 million over two years.

    9. Partners LeRay McAllister Fund $6 million annually for preserving critical open spaces and natural lands in Utah Money awarded to worthy applicants by The Utah Quality Growth Commission. TNC awarded $500,000

    10. Partners The Natural Resource Conservation Service Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Seeding Fencing Eradication of noxious weeds. Working to insure that habitat is balanced for both the cattle and the grouse.

    11. Partners Private Donors The Nature Conservancy is still working to raise the roughly $2.3 million remaining on the easement. If they dont they will provide the remaining money because this is a priority project. If they dont they will provide the remaining money because this is a priority project.

    12. Getting Involved Donations. Landowner Incentive Program Review Committee. Utah Quality Growth Commission. Volunteering with The Nature Conservancy. TNC has a member who sits on th Landowner Incentive Program review committee and helps judge proposals for available funds. The UDWR welcomes public input and recommendations are considered when allocating available funds (Scott Walker). At a UQGC commission meeting a concerned citizen convinced the board that the Selman Ranch project only needed $500,000 not the $700,000 they originally asked for.TNC has a member who sits on th Landowner Incentive Program review committee and helps judge proposals for available funds.
