NeuromyelitisOptica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD) Neuromyelitisoptica (NMO) and NMO Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD), also known as Devic's disease, is an autoimmune disorder in which immune system cells and antibodies primarily attack the optic nerves and the spinal cord. 01 The damage to optic nerves produces swelling and inflammation that cause pain and loss of vision; the damage to the spinal cord causes paralysis in the legs or arms, and problems with bladder and bowel function. 02 NMOSD symptoms can be optic neuritis or myelitis. Optic neuritis is inflammation of the optic nerve leading to pain inside the eye, which rapidly is followed by loss of clear vision. 03 04 There is a strong association with a personal or family history of autoimmunity.
