The art of food preparation is to combine foods and vary ingredients and cooking methods to produce interesting, appetizing, economical and nutritional meals. • Traditional meals were developed from: • Local ingredients • Seasonal ingredients • Recipes passed down through generations Holidays and travelling the world have inspired people to try new foods and technological advances have made the world our market place

When combining ingredients at home what do we mean by the terms: • Added value • Reducing fat • Reducing sugar • Enhancing flavour By adding grated cheese to mash potato adding in extra protein By grilling or baking and using low fat foods By using natural sweeteners: honey or fruit By adding extra flavours: herbs, spices etc

  4. Our lifestyles have altered and we depend far more on food products prepared and made in factories

When combining ingredients in industry what do we mean by the terms: • Added value • Reducing fat • Reducing sugar • Enhancing flavour It could mean making more profit or improving the image By adding water, whisking in extra air By using artificial sweeteners Did you know there are over 4000 flavourings available to a manufacturer By using additives.

  6. Your turn to do some work: Put a title: Combining Foods and draw a table, clearly explain the differences when cooking at home compared with industrial practice.
