Sentence combining Simon Nham
What is sentence combining? Sentence combining is: • Making the sentence smoother • Easier to understand or clarify • Putting detailed sentence of two or more short, choppy sentences
Short sentences are easy to read, but several of them in a row can become so monotonous that meaning gets lost. • In other words, it gets you or the reader BORED.
Example A BMW screamed around the corner. The BMW was fire-red. It screeched to a stop in front of the doors. The doors led into the school.
The fire-red BMW screamed around the corner and screeched to a stop in front of the school doors. Screaming around the corner, the fire-red BMW screeched to a stop in front of the school doors.
Different ways to combine sentences • Punctuation- combining sentences using punctuation marks such as dash (-), semicolons(;) and colons (:) • Coordination- combining sentences using conjunction words such as FANBOYS • Subordination- making one sentence more important than the other ( one independent and one dependent clause) • Reduction- reducing sentences into phrases • Apposition-the second expression that is supporting the first expression
