  1. Save Energy by Improving Power Factor Correction!!! Do you even know that how much energy are you wasting due to the inefficiency of your facility? Well, the power factor calculates the wastage for you. But what is the Power factor? How can you calculate it? Is it even necessary to calculate it? What are the advantages of improving it? Let’s answer each one of these questions in detail.

  2. What is the Power factor? Whoooof!!! We are glad that you came to this article to improve your power factor correction. Now that you are here, we will try to explain this complex topic in the simplest words possible. The appliances used in modern homes are mostly inductive, and inductive loads mostly require two types of current, viz: Working Power (measured in kW) and Reactive Power (measured in kilovolt-amperes-reactive (kVAR)). Ohhhk, we know that we have thrown two scientific terms out of nowhere, but here is one more term you need to know, and we promise that this is the last. Working Power and Reactive Power together are called, Apparent Power. But why are we talking about these terms? Because your power factor is just a rating of your facility’s total power efficiency. And to understand power efficiency, we need to understand these terms. How is Power factor correction calculated? Let us first get to know how the Power factor is calculated. The power factor is the ratio of working power to apparent power. It is an indication of how effectively or efficiently electrical power is being used. The more is the numerical value of the Power factor, the more effective the facility is. For instance, Power Factors below .80-.85 are charged penalty fees by the

  3. utility company because they are drawing more current than they are actually using, and Power Factor like 0.97 is considered extremely good. Ohhhk…time for a mathematical formula and calculation. To calculate the Power factor correction, we have to divide working power by apparent power, i.e., Power Factor = Working Power/ Apparent Power For example, if there is just one appliance in your home which is operating at 80kW and the apparent power consumed is 100kVA, and you want to calculate power factor correction, then you have to just simple divide 80 by 100, i.e., Power Factor = 80kW/ 100kVA = 0.8 Advantages of improving total facility energy efficiency? Albeit there are many advantages of improving facility energy efficiency, some of them being: Reduced electric utility bills Your system capacity will increase Improved voltage A sudden decrease in losses

  4. Concluding Note: The minimum allowed Power Factor is usually set by the local government in most of the countries. By not following the guidelines, you can invite hefty charges on your company or house. If you want to know more about power factor correction and power factor correction calculation for your premises, you can refer to Energy Control System.
