Epidemiology • Epidemiology and Public Health Surveillance is in charge of monitoring and investigating over fifty reportable diseases or conditions in Hillsborough County. • The staff at the department spoke to us about their role in epidemiology (e.g.- RN, ARNP, Microbiologists, clerical work, etc.)
Epidemiology (Cont.) • Epidemiologists try to spread awareness about the potential dangers of certain diseases and in what ways they can be prevented. • They test for concentrated areas of specific diseases.
Epidemiology plays a very significant role in the field of public health because it keeps the public safe from illness. Diseases: Hepatitis A, B, and C. Rabies Typhoid Fever Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Anthrax Tetanus Staphylococcus Epidemiology (Cont.)
Environmental Health • Tests were conducted for the quality of the pool and spa at the Courtyard Marriot on Fletcher Ave. • We tested for the chlorine content, pH, and chlorine stabilizer (cyanuric acid) concentration. • The quality of the filters and pumps was also checked.
Environmental Health (Cont.) • We learned about how concerns such as mineral concentration in water and bacteria in well systems can affect the public’s health. • Chlorine is an important chemical used to keep a pool safe for swimming by killing the bacteria
Environmental Health (Cont.) • Environmental health concerns everyone!!! • This includes: pool safety, clean drinking water, piercings and tattoos, the correction of health standard violations, etc.
HIV / AIDS-weakens the immune systems and it spreads during sex or with infected needles- there’s only treatment-no cure Chlamydia-pain and discharge during urination; can lead to sterility or other damage to reproductive organs-can be cured Gonorrhea- spreads during sex-appears a few days after you catch it; can cause sterility – can be cured Syphilis-spreads through any kind of sexual contact; can cause blindness and even death-can be cured Herpes-painful outbreaks of sores and blisters; spreads through contact even without sores; cannot be cured – only treatment HPV-spreads through genital contact; causes warts and dysplasia-can’t be cured-only treatment STD’s
Why Are STD’s Important? • Sexually Transmitted Diseases- serious public health issues • can cause serious damage to reproductive organs and sterility • anyone having sex is at risk • many STD’s don’t present with immediate symptoms, so it can spread easily through any kind of sexual activity and many people don’t know they have it
Abstinence is best for all cases Types of birth control in order of effectiveness: protect surgical sterilization- greater than 99% but does notagainst STDs the patch and the pill are 99% effective; does not protect against STDs male condom-99% effective and it protects against some STD’s Health Care- Specialty Care Clinic provides both HIV and STD services for : Little or no money Anyone over 12 can be seen Provides medication with or without insurance All services for patients above 12 are confidential Birth Control and Health Care
HIPPA family planning and teen pregnancy Epidemiology- spread of communicable diseases Environmental Services- Pool inspections, septic systems and drinking water HIV and STD prevention , protection and treatment Lessons learned People of any age or culture can get health care services Pregnancy and STD can be prevented and also it can be helped Immunizations help protect against viruses Tests done for safety hazards-pools, septic systems , drinking water and etc. Summary
How can we make a difference? • Inform friends and friends about safe sex • Help prevent the spread of communicable diseases with immunizations • How to keep your public pool safe • Inform family and friends about confidential health care services • No Love Without the Glove!!!
How can we a difference in our professional future? • Provide funding for health care services • Volunteer at health fairs to equip people with the knowledge and resources to protect themselves and others against communicable diseases
