Our work stays aligned with industry market requirements • Work has evolved- • Moving from ADSL transport to addressing all DSL options • Adding access-agnostic remote management specifications • Now we are adding fiber specifications into our broadband solutions • Over the years, our focus has changed from simple connectivity to supporting dynamic IP-centric services and CPE remote management

  3. It’s all about Evolution • As the technology matured, so did the work of the Forum • Yet as our scope grew and evolved, our identity stayed the same and today it is clear that the name DSL Forum no longer represents all we do • It was time for change…

  4. Becoming TheBroadband Forum • The Broadband Forum mission is to develop the full potential of broadband. Focused on application based solutions, our standards empower providers to achieve more with broadband deployment and management.

How will this change us? • Work will continue • DSL related work will continue as strong as ever! • Fiber related architecture and home network support will expand • Additional work will launch addressing IPTV, including white papers on Installation Best Practices • Quality of Experience (QoE) takes center stage with new work, and service provider best practice education • Commitment to IPv6 adherence in all specifications • Fixed Mobile Convergence related work is kicking off • Energy efficiency becomes a more visible consideration in all we do

  9. What does the industry need?

Improving Access/Architecture Requirements • TR-126 documented the requirements for IPTV (both standard definition and high-definition)  • This work was extensively liaised to standards bodies like ATIS and ITU who used it to inform much of their own work in this area.  • TR-101 provided:   • Blueprint for how to build a multiservice/triple-play broadband network and includes the functional requirements of all the key network elements (Residential Gatey/DSL router, Access Node/DSLAM, aggregation network and Broadband Network Gateway (BNG).   • Functional requirements to cover the capabilities needed to deliver IPTV with multicast and QoS (see also TR-92 for more background on BNG QoS requirements such as hierarchical scheduling). • TR-101 architecture is currently being extended to encompass GPON access via WT-156.

Performance is key • Given a good architecture like TR-101 and good design implementation and capacity management then the delivery of IPTV over the core and aggregation networks should be well assured.   • Then, the most likely root cause for IPTV QoE problems experienced by an end-user is likely to be the DSL line (copper) or home network.   • Hence the Broadband Forum has put a huge amount of effort into the performance requirements and associated testing of the DSL layer transmission systems • TR-100 for ADSL2plus and • WT-114/WT 115 for VDSL2

Quality Standards for the HomeWork in development • More recent work is addressing QoS in home networks(in conjunction with HGI – Home Gateway Initiative). • Extend the geographic coverage of IPTV by extolling the virtues of various transmission approaches that can give improvements (PD-180).   • Specific recommendations for DSLAM profiles to be used to deliver IPTV over ADSL2plus (WT-176).  • Service providers are seeking to improve their business case for IPTV over DSL by enabling end-users to self-install the equipment.   • It is important that this is done correctly to ensure the appropriate IPTV QoE is not compromised by such an installation. • Hence we are producing an IPTV Installation best practice guidelines in this area (PD-179).

Next Steps for our work in Triple Play • The Future of gateway/modem requirements • Broadband Forum will continue to add additional interface feature modules to maintain current with RG market demands • Add new features or network devices as service deployments require • Add new WAN/LAN interfaces as they are introduced to market (e.g. Bluetooth, GPON, WiMAX, etc.) • Full QoS in BroadbandHome • Refine Home Network Reference Model • Extend Broadband Forum Network Requirements (TR-059) to the Home • Adopt/Leverage QoS Specifications defined by other standards groups such as UPnP, DLNA, IETF, HGI • Continue to align with the industry • In regards to IPTV / Triple Play specifically, coordinate closely with ITU-T (SG9/SG11/SG12/SG13/SG15/SG16), ATIS IIF, UPnP Forum and DLNA to ensure we are closing any technical gaps within our remit and we are not duplicating any efforts

Broadband Forum Strategic Objectives • Expand and address physical layer options (ADSL2plus, VDSL2, and fiber) for greater performance • Continue to address key IPTV functions, expedite STB management, and resolve performance issues • Continue to promote the position of the TR-069 family of CPE remote management specifications • Act as the wireline advocate in FMC requirements - this is becoming a bigger focus as this business develops • Address IPv6 considerations in all our work - architecture, home and policy control specifications currently being updated • Incorporate energy efficiency considerations into our specifications - network and customer premises are a priority • Continue to liaise and coordinate with the wider industry - SDO’s, fora and consortia
