  4. Union of the IP/MPLS Forum and the Broadband Forum • We develop multi-service broadband packet networking specifications addressing interoperability, architecture and management. Our work enables home, business and converged broadband services, encompassing customer, access and backbone networks.

  6. Why Unite? Both the Broadband Forum and IP/MPLS Forum were focused on driving the evolution to next generation IP networks and empowering fixed mobile convergence evolution The work of each organization complimented the other With the Broadband Forum's focus spanning from broadband network to digital home management, and the work of the IP/MPLS Forum primarily addressing the core and access aggregation Many shared members- The majority of Broadband Forum and IP/MPLS Forum service provider members have MPLS based core networks deployed and there is a keen interest in this MPLS work continuing and developing. Expanding the Broadband Forum’s objectives to encompass the next phase of IP/MPLS Forum work ensures seamless broadband network optimization and convergence for the industry.

Combining our efforts we are- Pursuing our common vision with greater resources and shared expertise Driving Quality of Experience (QoE) measures throughout the network to better serve application requirements Specifying seamless end-to-end solutions Fostering greater interoperability Defining and facilitating the adoption of next generation IP networks to deliver the broadband experience to users in the home, in the office and on the street Engineering effective solutions for emerging applications such as mobile backhaul, IPTV, gaming, P2P applications and applications that have not yet been realized

The focus on technology-agnostic solutions hasn’t changed The focus on technology agnostic solutions continues Though MPLS is clearly of critical importance to the industry, the Broadband Forum continues to welcome contributions and work involving other technologies as the industry continues to evolve Liaison and cooperative work with organizations such as IETF, ITU-T and Metro Ethernet Forum remain strong The strength of the Broadband Forum continues to be the organization’s ability to focus on developing specifications that best serve the service & application requirements of carriers and their customers

Broadband Forum Strategic Objectives • Expand and address physical layer options for greater performance • Optimize IPTV delivery, performance and customer experience • Continue to expand our remote management specifications • Act as the wireline advocate in FMC requirements • Build on the IP/MPLS work, particularly on mobile backhaul • Address IPv6 considerations in all our work • Incorporate energy efficiency considerations into our specifications • Continue to liaise and coordinate with the wider industry - SDO’s, fora and consortia
