Abriefinformationonvarioustypesof fractionsarementionedbelow: difficult for many students in FRACTION ON THE NUMBER LINE Fractionscanbeshowninnumberlines. Let'sdiscusswithanexample, draw astraightline. Mark1/2  onit. Weknowthat1/2isgreaterthan0andless than1. Itwillbeplacedinbetweendividedintotwoequalparts. Thesame methodcanbefollowedfor1/3  and2/3 . Herethelinewillbedividedinto threeandfourequalpartsrespectively. PROPER FRACTIONS Thefractioniscalledproperifthenumeratorislessthandenominatorandis positive. Forexample, 1/2 , 3/4 , 4/9etc. Inproperfractions, thedenominator showsthenumberofpartsintowhichthewholeisdividedandnumerator wherethenumberofpartshavebeenconsidered. IMPROPER AND MIXED FRACTIONS Thefractionswherethenumeratorisbiggerthanthedenominatoriscalled improperfractions. Forexample, 3/2, 12/7, 18/5etc. whereasthemixed fractionsarethosethathaveacombinationofwholeandapart. Forexample, 17/4i.e  when17isdividedby4isequalto41∕4. Let'sdiscusswithanexample, Expressthemixedfractionsasimproperfractions :23/4  = 2+3/4 = (2x4)/4 +3/4 = 11/4 Thereforewecanexpressmixedfractionsasimproperfractions      WholeDenominator + Numerator Denominator EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS Thefractionsaretakenfromthetotalnumberofparts. Itisequallydivided partofthewhole. Forexample, 1/2 , 2/4and3/6. ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS Thefractionscanbeaddedorsubtracted. Beforeaddingorsubtractingwe mustfindthesamedenominators. Let'sdiscusswithanexample,   Since1/5  and1/2arehavingdifferentdenominator, wemustfindthe equivalentfractionwithsamedenominator  1/2 = 1x5/2x5=5/10 1/5 = 1x2/5x2=2/10 Theseare5/10and2/10respectively,  Therefore1/2 - 1/5 = 5/10-2/10= 5-2/10= 3/10 Embibe.com
