Self-Care For professional burnout and how to communicate with clients By: Nick Drake, MSW, LSWAIC, MHP, CCATP
What is Self-Care? • Anything you do to take care of yourself • Physically • Mentally/Spiritually • Emotionally
Why is self-care important? • Helps us maintain a strong, healthy relationship with ourselves • Fits our needs • Shows respect for self • Encourages self-compassion • Increases resiliency • Increases capacity for positive emotions • Increases ability to build stronger relationships with others • Increases energy so we can participate in our lives
Imagine you are a bucket • We “fill our buckets” with “social energy” by participating in self-care. • The things in our lives that we do that are draining “drains our buckets.”
What drains our buckets? • Work • Family • Therapy • Illness • Chores • Personal engagement • Paying bills • Taking care of others • …And a whole lot more! Anything that requires our emotional and social energy to participate in and complete.
Burnout – The signs and symptoms • Cynicism • Lack of motivation • Lack of energy • Irritability • Fatigue • Overindulgence in comforts • Lack of concentration • Poor sleep habits • Physical issues (Headaches, stomach aches, bowel problems, aches, pains)
What fills our bucket? Self Care
Too Much Self Care? • Overindulgence can disrupt accountability, problem solving, mindfulness and overall damage sense of self respect.
There are sometimes holes in the Bucket • Trauma • Addiction • Codependence • Eating Disorders • Learned Helplessness
Healing the holes in our buckets • Therapy • Medication • Medical care • Social supports • Trauma work
Planning for Self-care • Ideally small amount daily • If that is too much or our days are too busy, then weekly scheduled self-care is needed • Before socially draining activities or after • Be flexible with activities or times if needed • Give yourself a time limit to avoid the overindulgence
Is Self-care selfish? • Selfish versus Self-Centered • Me first versus Me only • We have an obligation to make sure we are taken care of, especially if we are required to or like taking care of others
Self-care is biblical • Jesus rested : Mark 4:38-40 • Jesus engaged in community : Matthew 26:17-30 • Jesus had alone time : Matthew 14:23 • Jesus prayed : Luke 5:16
