  2. WHERE? ARTICLES & VIDEOS IN A NUTSHELL The Project ACTIVITIES ESC TRAININGS VOLUNTEERS FREE TIME

  3. Where? Funchal Funchal Funchal A city on the magical island of Madeira - an autonomous region of Portugal 1000km into the Atlantic Ocean Settled by the Portuguese in the beginning of the Age of Discoveries in the 15th century Now a city of 100,000 (almost half of the island's population) Layered landscapes, charming towns, tall mountains and lush greenery surrounded by a deep blue ocean A great place for hikes, New Year's Eve fireworks, cultural festivals and flower-watching True international community thanks to the island's history and a recent influx of digital nomads.

  4. Where? (part 2) The Project was hosted by the Academic Association of the University of Madeira The University of Madeira was established in 1988 to allow young people to stay on the island rather than having to leave to get higher education Our "centre of operations" was the old College of Jesuits in Funchal (pictured left)

  5. THE PROJECT in a nutshell *** I worked as a guide in Funchal, taking tourists on walking tours of the city. The money collected from the tickets was used by the University for their social aid projects, which help poorer students attend university.

  6. Activity #1: Tour-guiding This was a great majority of our time. Once you learned enough about Madeira's history and passed the exam, you could start touring - small groups, big groups, repeat visitors and those coming for one day on a cruise ship. The tours took up to 2 hours and you could build your own, change it and improvise - adapt it to what your tourists wanted to hear about. Sometimes, it's true, it felt like repeating yourself, but usually meeting people from all over the world and hearing their stories was very rewarding. It allowed me to daily appreciate the beauty of the place I was now living in!

  7. Activity #2: Tree-planting Once a month, we would go to the Ecological Park in Funchal for what we generally called 'tree- planting'. The Ecological Park leads many programs aimed at revitalisation of nature on Madeira. Activities there differed: sometimes we worked in a plant school, sometimes we cut down plants such as the eucalyptus, which on Madeira is an invasive species and endangers the local flora.

  8. Activity #3: Promoting cultural events The University often organised cultural events - fado concerts being the most popular and frequent ones. As volunteers, we would help in the organisation and promotion of these events - and then, we could attend ourselves too!

  9. The Volunteers changed throughout the project - we didn't have the same project dates. But they were always a friendly and international group.

  10. The ESC trainings On-arrival training in Viseu in July Mid-term training in Braga in October

  11. The on-arrival training was an opportunity to learn more about the ESC programme and see how my project fits into its principles. It was also a great chance to meet other people volunteering in Portugal and hear about their projects.

  12. The mid-term training was a time to reflect on the project so far and define any outstanding goals to achieve before its end. It was also a great opportunity to take a broader look at how the project fits in with my other life decisions and consider what steps I want to take after my ESC time ends.

  13. I spent my free time, hiking along the levadas, exploring the island and learning about its history.
