  1. Sunset Western Garden BookEdited by Kathleen Norris Brenzel Robyn Schultz LIBR 150 Week 4

  2. Citation and Call Number • Brenzel, Kathleen Norris. Western Garden Book. Grand Rapids: Sunset Corporation, 2001. • 635.0978 SUN 2001

  3. Arrangement • The Sunset Western Garden Book is arranged in 5 Sections: • Gardening for the New Century • The West's Climate Zones • A Guide to Plant Selection • Western Plant Encyclopedia • Practical Guide to Gardening

  4. Indexing • In the Guide to Plant Selection it is broken down further into 4 subsections • Color – seasonal, cutting flowers, autumn foliage • Basic Landscaping – vines, ferns, ground covers • Special Situations – damp soil, rock gardens and window boxes • Problem Solvers – Dry, shady and windy areas • In the Western Plant Encyclopedia section is lists more than 8,000 plants. It includes color illustrations and photographs. Plants a listed alphabetical by their botanical name for ornamentals and herbs, by their common name for fruits and vegetables.

  5. Scope The Sunset Western Garden Book is not just a list of plants. • It includes inspirational photos of different types of gardens. • There are tips on pruning, composting and applying fertilizers. • There is also Zonal guide which will help you determine what plants will work in your region.

  6. Currency The copy that I’m review was published in 2001 and it is the 7th edition of this title. However there is an 8th edition to this title that was published in 2007. According to the information I could find on WorldCat it states the 8th is completely revised and updated. That same notation is also listed on the front of the 2001 edition.

  7. Intended Purpose • This book is intended to be a comprehensive guide to gardening in the West’s 11 contiguous states, plus Alaska, Hawaii and Canada’s British Columbia and Alberta provinces. • Lists the Climate Zones for each plant index so you will know if it’s suitable to your location. • To provide gardening and landscaping inspiration.

  8. Additional Purposes • This book will be a great help to professional landscapers. • Will be invaluable to a nurseryman trying to determine what kind of pest is attacking a shrub. • Fun for the beginner vegetable gardener.

  9. Format • The Sunset Western Garden Book is only available in book form. • 768 p. : col. ill., maps ; 28 cm.

  10. Special Features • Resource Directory • It includes a list of public and historical gardens. • A Guide to Demystifying Scientific Plant Names and Pronunciation Guide • Glossary and Indexes • Glossary of gardening terms • Alphabetical index of gardening terms and topics

  11. Authority There was an excellent review of this edition by Valerie Easton, Valerie in Horticulture Jan/Feb2002, Vol. 99, Issue 1. • “Editor Brenzel describes her year-and-a-half task of revision as a little like conducting an orchestra. Her core staff of ten worked with experts all over the West, including extension agents, nursery owners, growers, and climatologists. • If there is one item common to every western gardener's bookshelf, it is this book, a classic since it was first introduced in the 1930s, and a template for the best in regional reference books. The heart of the book remains the plant encyclopedia, with 8,000 listings, thousands of them new.”

  12. Personal Impression • If you need one and only one gardening book this would be the one to have on your shelf. • The list of plants is impressive, but not overwhelming. • Practical tips and great list of resources. • All the color photos really help you get an idea of what the plant will look like in your yard.

  13. Reference Uses • I need to learn how to prune the trees in my yard. • There is a great pruning section the Practical Guide to Gardening section. It includes easy to understand instructions and nice color illustrations. • I’m doing a science report on different plants, but the teacher says I have to include the botanical names. • All the plants listed in this book have their botanical names included.

  14. Complimentary Sources • Sunset Books. Western Garden Problem Solver. Menlo Park, Calif: Sunset Books, 1998. • Gillespie, Norvell. 1001 Western Garden Questions Answered. Princeton, N.J.: Van Nostrand, 1966. • Moulton, Margaret. The Western Gardener's Journal: A Three-Year Almanac. San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books, 1998.
