Sander Uses & Applications

There is the right type of sander for each application. For instance, a random orbital sander is designed for heavy use, while a standard sander is more for general work. For more on this, take a look at these slides.

  1. The Different Uses and Applications for Sanders

  2. We'll take a look at some sanders and have a talk about the types of sanders there are. There are random orbitals we can use. Let’s consider what applications we use them for and how to choose the right sander for your job. There is such a broad range of sanders on the market that finding the correct one for the job can be can be quite a challenge. There are types of applications you're going to do that can really fit quite well with a certain sander. We could be removing paint. We could be working with solid timber veneers or even solid surface acrylic product. Different sanders work better with different types of materials. Some sanders will give us really rapid removal where we can we can cut quite quickly. Other times we want to find a sander for intermediate work. For ultra fine work, we're looking for a really good finish. The application and the job you’re going to use the sander for needs to be affordable and will direct you to the best sander for you. One thing to keep in mind is not all sanders built for longevity.

  3. We offer two different types of sanders. With the random orbitals, we've got something for really heavy use, industrial use which is a brushless sander. We also offer our standard sander which is 150 ml. This is for general work. Some are used for longer term applications than others. What's really important when you have a look at a sanding system is has it got a system built around it? We’ve got different pads, different types of abrasive to match the material. Once you've got this right, this is where you're going to get the best finish. Different types of pads we can use for different applications. This one is a hard pad that we use where we want to keep a really flat edge, but also a flat surface area. We also do soft pads for curves and contours. They offer a lot more flexibility. Something you need to look at is to make sure that you have got the correct type of system

  4. behind There are also different polishing pads as well that are available. Part of that system also is to work on bigger curves and contours. This is where we can use interface pads. There are soft pads that will go on before the abrasive on top. This allows us to curve to contours, even deep dishes and things like that which we might need to work with. One key consideration is what sort of life you get out of your abrasive. With abrasives, one big issue is they’ll clog in the middle and people throw them out. They'll put another one on and it will clog in the middle again. They’ll throw that one out. If you get a brush and a little rag, you can quickly wipe that off the abrasives underneath. The reason it gets clogged when you're doing fine work is it hasn't got a good vacuum system. With our multi jet stream, however, it actually funnels the dust. It sends it through the middle of the pad and it continuously spreads that dust to the outside of

  5. the pad. This will give us a lot longer life out of our abrasives. So your costs come down. The abrasives do what they’re meant to do and sand the surface quickly so you get better use and also get your required finish a lot quicker. What size sanding pad you need? Which orbit size is required? All this is quite important. You can see on this one that we've got a 5 on top. This means that it's a 5ml orbit. That is two and half mil off center each side. So a five mil orbit is classed as an intermediate sander. It's designed to give you a little bit more stock removal. If we use a three ml, some of the sanders we’ll see with the 3 ml is for fine sanding. It's a very small orbit, which means that you get a really good surface. Another consideration when you're looking for a sander is, has it got different options as far as what orbit size is best for you? Depending on what abrasive you use will then determine what type of sander you use.

  6. Having the correct dust extraction system is really important too. This type of system really allows you to use it for a variety of different applications. The full systems are offered here with Festool, the correct sander, the correct sanding pad and the correct abrasive. Depending on what you're using it for, we’ll also give you the orbits that you require as well. One key factor is you need to look at is if it's effective for dust extraction. You can see here, the 27 ml hose connected to our extractors fits all the tools in the range. This is where you can really work effectively on removing the dust getting to your surface, finishing and working a lot quicker. You can then work a little bit faster and having the system behind it, it can also allow you to work a lot easier. If you like what you see here, you can always give us a call. Our technical sales consultants will visit you on site. They can come out and you can use the sander. You can see how it will benefit you in the long run.
