  1. Does Yoga Help Build Muscle? Contrary to popular belief Yoga does actually help build muscle but not all by itself. Building muscle is not as simple as it seems. You can’t just lift a bunch of weights 4 times a week and except to get swole. People have different body types and each type responds to weight training differently. An endomorph, for example, can gain weight rather easily but needs accompanying fat to build muscle. On the other hand, an ectomorph can sweat it out in the gym twice a day, 6 days a week and see little results due to their metabolism. So, where does the element of Yoga come in here? Regardless of what your body type is, Yoga can help you gain lean muscle. Much like calisthenics, wherein you use your own body weight to train, Yoga requires you to manoeuvre in ways that exerts pressure on your muscles in a very similar way to weight training. Now, it’s not the same as benching 300 pounds or deadlifting twice your body weight but it’s definitely more than just glorified stretching. If your goal is to build muscle, burn fat and increase intramuscular flexibility then you need to find a sweet spot between Yoga and weight training. This combination allows you to extract the best of both worlds while pushing you to do more at both fronts. With the strength gained from weight training you can increase your resistance power which will be a great asset to progress with your Yoga routines. Correspondingly, the flexibility, peace of mind and endurance gained from Yoga will propel you to train harder with weights.
