You definitely want to keep track of when they achieve something new and make sure they are on par with other children their age. That being said, it’s easy to fall into this world of comparison and competition.

  3. Not AComparative Scale One of the best support systems a new mother can have is other mothers with children of similar age. Unfortunately, the downside is that it is so easy to start comparing what the other children are able to do to what your child has achieved. Then, we start feeling bad if our child hasn’t advanced as much as another child.

  4. Every Child Will Advance At His Own Pace I have to remind myself that every child will advance at his or her own pace. As long as her pediatrician isn’t worried, I have no reason to be. My child can do some things well ahead and in some things is behind. Comparing just makes us feel incompetent and then, we end up put pressure on ourselves and our children.

  5. Extra Pressure What Our Children Should Be Accomplishing Being a parent is tough enough. The extra pressure to keep up with what we think our children should be accomplishing makes it so much harder. I am constantly reminded of the mother of a 6 month old telling me her child has already saying a few words and another mother of a 7 month old telling me her child was already standing. I could spend all of my time trying to make my child practice crawling or standing. I could force her to do this instead of playing or socializing which she loves doing.
