Environmental Scan Careers in Allied Health Northern California RegionApril 2009 • Between 2002 and 2007 the health care industry added 17,000 jobs in Northern CA, growing twice as fast as the overall economy. • By 2017, the health care industry is projected to grow by 23 percent in Northern California, with the greatest growth in the Greater Sacramento Region. • Health care employers estimate that 5.1 percent of their current workforce, approximately 6,400 employees will retire in the next three years in Northern California.

Short-Term (5 year) Occupational Projections for California • By 2012, 41 allied health occupations are projected to account for more than 1.1 million jobs • - 130,000 jobs or 13% growth from 2007 • - Largest growth in new jobs • RNs (34,010) • Nurse Assistants (12,850) • Medical Assistants (10,860) • Home Health Aides (10,380)

Governor’s Nurse Education Initiative Total Amount = $90 Million in awards and matching over five years. “Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the release of $13 million in Workforce Investment Act and Wagner Peyser Act funds to support statewide nursing job-training and education initiatives……” "These funds help address our state's very persistent and real nursing shortage," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "Patient safety is a top priority for this Administration, and we must work to ensure that Californians have access to the healthcare they deserve.  Every effort must be made to help our hospitals and healthcare providers fill the nursing positions they need to deliver safe, quality patient care.“ Sacramento Bee: Friday, March 18, 2005

California Community Colleges ADN Program Nursing Expansion • 74 CCC ADN programs enroll 13,047 full-time-equivalent students (FTES) in 2009 • Nursing Expansion at Community Colleges is Multi-faceted • 61 colleges received grants to expand enrollments. • Grant colleges committed to add 2,298 nursing slots (FTES) statewide by 08-09. • CC ADN Enrollments Up 48% since 2004-05 • 70 colleges received grants for diagnostic and support services, pre-entry coursework, and other services to reduce attrition. • New Legislation: Allowed Grant ADN Nursing Expansion Colleges to use State approved Pre-Nursing Enrollment tests, multi-criterion enrollment processes, and develop remediation programs for Pre Nursing students—all aimed at promoting student success. • Six new ADN Programs have started since 2004-05 • Total funds for Nursing Expansion since 2004 to date: $164.3 million dollars

Health Initiative Mission The purpose of the Health Care Initiative is to identify workforce needs of the health care delivery system and develop solutions through a comprehensive, problem-solving process. This process may include assessment and analysis, planning and development, implementation and evaluation. The role of the Regional Health Occupations Resource Center (RHORC) is to facilitate collaboration between the education segments and the health care delivery system to respond to identified needs.

Welcome Back Centers(International Healthcare Workers Assistance Center) • 1400 Validated their Credentials • 747 Passed Licensing Exams • 276 Obtained License in their Original Professions • 444 Entered New Careers in Health • 847 Obtained New Employment in the Health Sector • 55 MD’s Accepted into Residency Programs

EWD at the Community Colleges • The Program helps the economic strength of the state and is a wise investment made by the State: • Legislated in 1991, the Program is the major state-level economic delivery system • The basic funding is vital for bringing in outside investment- A network of 115 centers shows a benefit-to-cost ratio of 4:1 • 3,500 jobs created, 4,000 jobs retained and benefits the State’s economy through increased wages, business profitability and taxes paid (annual) • Serves a wide range of beneficiaries – students, workers, colleges and businesses • Supports the largest Small Business Development Center network in the United States
