  1. Eastview Hockey “GOLDEN RULES”

  2. 1. DEFENSIVE ZONE

  3. Eastview Hockey NEUTRAL ZONE DEFENSIVE ZONE Hustle all the way to the box when changing. Your shift isn’t over until you’re on the bench. Be sure to hold up opposing fore-checker on dump ins & at all face offs. Late man arriving in zone – check behind and pick up open opponent When caught out of position and tired, get a whistle – Ice the puck! Pick up the wide man or trailer in the neutral zone when back- checking & STAY with him all the way to the net. Wings – recover to point coverage duties when play settles down Point coverage to weak-side always watches slots & front of net if someone low gets beat. Be a “safety valve” Always play the body – no fishing! When covering a man weakside, stay on defensive side within stick length’s distances & block out at all times Never leave a man unguarded in front of our net, when puck possession is in jeopardy. However, if we have or clearly are going to have possession, get to an outlet position for breakout Winning 1-1 battles will win hockey games Backcheck aggressively so that our D-man can hold our blue line – do not chase puck carrier. Man to man D-zone coverage down deep (Def + Cen), wings play zone. Keep body between your man & our net. NO ROOM Always force opponent with puck HARD as he enters our zone. Use “Coffin Corner” Defense – STEP UP and take your man as he cuts cross ice if you have a stick on him. If further than a stick length, stay in lane and “switch” responsibilities Stay on feet during D-zone coverage – exceptions: 1) D below hash on 2-1 2) weakside D pen-kill rotation 3) block shot at point Watch your man – he can’t beat you out of corner. Stay with him after he passes the puck – No give & go’s On Defense – without the puck

  4. Eastview Hockey NEUTRAL ZONE DEFENSIVE ZONE Be strong on the boards. If challenged, protect puck and make sure it gets out over our blueline, especially on wraps Always pivot when looking for a pass. Face the puck – centers post up if needed When caught out of position and tired, get a whistle – Ice the puck! Diagonal cross ice passes in all zones should be attempted ONLY when we are 100% sure of completion, THEY MUST BE HARD Defense, remember to stay inside dots on rotations to give you 2 good pass angles – middle or boards. Always back up your partner. Winning 1-1 battles will win hockey games Don’t go back below top of circles in our zone with puck unless on special team play On Offense – with possession of the puck

  5. 2. ATTACKING ZONE

  6. Eastview Hockey NEUTRAL ZONE OFFENSIVE ZONE If there is no outlet, use cycle play to corner or scissor play with D. Do not turn puck over between blue line and hashmarks. Work the alleys. Drive hard to the outside Never pass the puck blindly back toward our zone, to the slot or to the point. AVOID BEING OFFSIDE IN PRACTICE AS WELL AS GAMES. Create outnumbered (2x1) situations by hustling & supporting the puck carrier NEVER be below goal line when puck is at the point – GET IN FRONT! Puck carrier should try to penetrate into O-Zone. Do not force in outnumbered situations at blueline. Dump puck, delay, or regroup. Take the puck toward the net. Shoot very or very low and always very hard. Have poise and take punishment in red zone. Stop at net for rebounds or late passes. Rebounds are key for goal scoring. Follow all shots aggressively to the net and be strong on stick. Rebounds account for over 50% of all goals. FORWARDS- Dump puck back to D during regrouping when facing the wrong way. Then circle and regroup with speed. Do not use slapshot below hashmarks. Always shoot from top of circles and in Utilize width of ice surface when attacking the blueline – attack with speed. Winning 1-1 battles will win hockey games If outnumbered or tired, dump puck after crossing the redline. Keep our men moving. Dump puck away from goalie. Point – men: Shoot quickly, low & on net! Slapshot is not always needed – wrist it to net when pressured Always use triangle formation on offense On Offense – with possession of the puck

  7. Eastview Hockey NEUTRAL ZONE OFFENSIVE ZONE D – if you pinch, play the body. Must have F3 support. Don’t pinch on rotations. “Cheat” to top of circle on puck side Winning 1-1 battles will win hockey games Forecheck aggressively, anticipate the puck. Play body when you are F1 – F2 read/react, F3 contain Angle opponent to boards when forechecking. Make them run out of room On Defense – without the puck
