Get Out of the1950s • City/County conflicts,inter-jurisdictional competition among “shrinking cities” • Upstate - downstate competition • Poorly designed deregulation and subsidies that raise costs for consumers and small business • Insufficient infrastructure investment to connect Upstate with US and global economies • A dated self-image. Upstate is now a rapidly changing (international, “green”, innovative industries) region

  12. Don’t give up on manufacturing. We benefit from diversity. • Leverage already-strong health and education sectors for economic development, supporting innovation and investments. Use our assets! • Insist on local/ town/county government consolidation and more regional cooperation. • Demand a critical analysis of state economic development programs and a focus on building assets, workforce skills, and infrastructure. Support SMEs not just large firms. • Promote a new image of upstate
