  1. A Truck driver's safety tips for driving in heavy traffic

  2. Introduction Traffic congestion is a cause of concern for many truck drivers. In many cases, it leads to severe anxiety issues in drivers that might significantly hamper his/her driving performance on the road. If you are one among them, you should consider going through these safety tips. These might come in handy for you.

  3. Curb all distractions The last thing you need while driving in heavy traffic is distractions. Reduce them to the bare minimum. Switch off your cell phone or put it on “silent” at least for the time being. Turn down your music until you’re free of dense traffic.

  4. Don’t drive aggressively Now this almost goes without saying. Defensive driving should be the ace up your sleeve while driving through dense traffic. Keep scanning the road and identify vehicles that look unsafe to you. Follow the flow of traffic. Move slowly but steadily. Signal before making a turn. And don’t forget to allow plenty of space between you and other vehicles.

  5. Use lower gears Driving on lower gears will result in a substantial improvement of engine efficiency. It’ll also help you brake quickly as per requirement. These two things are an absolute must while driving through dense traffic.

  6. Maintain distance In heavy traffic, it’s always advisable to keep a reasonable distance between your truck and the vehicle in front of you. That reasonable distance is deemed as your safe zone. Allow as much space as possible between your truck and traffic in front of you. Sudden stops are much more likely in heavy traffic.

  7. Be patient Most accidents happen as a result of impatience. Always remember that keeping patience is the key to avoiding any form of disaster. Prepare yourself for emergency maneuvers by scanning the road up ahead. Keep calm and the rest will seem just like a piece of cake.

  8. Exit the freeway If you are uncomfortable with the drive, just stop where you are. Exit the freeway and find a place to take a break. Always remember prevention is always better than cure.
