  1. Snow Driving Safety Tips

  2. You may be a beginning driver or come from a part of the country where snow and ice do not exist. Or you just need a refresher on how to drive on snow after a long, hot summer. You are unsure of exactly how to drive in this white substance and need tips on staying safe while on the road. Some of these helpful suggestions include:

  3. Be Prepared Make sure your car is properly maintained with the correct amount of antifreeze added, tires rotated or even changed, and plenty of gas. Always drive with at least a quarter of gas in your tank at all times, so the gas lines do not freeze and cause your vehicle to stall while driving in this inclement weather. Be sure that you always have your cell phone with you, especially if you are traveling long distances in not-so-populated areas.

  4. Check the Weather Keep up-to-date on the weather forecasts. It may be necessary to cancel, postpone, or change your driving route when the snow begins to come down. Listen to bank, school, road, and business closings so you do not make unnecessary trips. Check the extended forecasts also so you can change plans and use alternate routes if it is necessary for you to be out and about in the snow.

  5. Stock Up Keep a stock of emergency supplies inside your vehicle all winter long, especially if you are in an area where snow and accompanying bad weather can strike quickly. These supplies should include flares, candles, matches or lighters, a battery-operated lantern, extra warm clothing, blankets, a shovel, kitty litter (for traction if your vehicle gets stuck), a windshield scraper, water, and a first-aid kit.

  6. Use Caution Even if you are an excellent driver on snow and ice, that doesn't necessarily mean the other drivers out on the roads are. Avoid vehicles that are traveling too fast, or cars where the driver seems unsure of himself. Sometimes it is safer to go the extra miles to take a detour where traffic is slower than it is to get in heavy traffic during snowfall.

  7. Go Slow Speed is one thing that should be forgotten in weather like this. Accelerate slowly, drive slowly, and never unexpectedly step on the gas. Keep a lot of distance between yourself and the car in front of you to provide extra room for braking. When approaching a hill, accelerate slightly before you reach because if you try to go faster while ascending the summit, you may find yourself just spinning your wheels.

  8. Stay Home If the snow is coming down too fast, you don't have the necessary safety supplies, if you have been drinking, or if you are fatigued, do yourself and everyone else a favor and stay home where it is safe and warm. Making a point always to follow these tips and suggestions will help keep you and your passengers safe, warm and dry during snowy weather. It is especially important to teach these to begin drivers so they will have these skills for the remainder of their driving lives.
