Explanation of Assistive Technology • Assistive technology is any kind of technology that can be used to enhance the functional independence of a person with a disability. • Assistive technology devices are tools to help overcome those challenges and enable people living with disabilities to enhance their quality of life and lead more independent lives.

  3. Law in Regards to Assistive Technology The Assistive Technology Act was first passed by Congress and signed by the President as the Technology-Related Assistance Act of 1988. It’s often called the Tech Act for short and has been reauthorized in 1994, 1998, and 2004. The most current version of the Act is authorized through 2010. The Purpose of the Tech Act: The Tech Act is intended to promote people’s awareness of, and access to, assistive technology  (AT) devices and services. The Act seeks to provide AT to persons with disabilities, so they can more fully participate in education, employment, and daily activities on a level playing field with other members of their communities. The Act covers people with disabilities of all ages, all disabilities, in all environments (early intervention, K-12, post-secondary, vocational rehabilitation, community living, aging services, etc.).

  4. HEARING IMPAIRED Semantroids Semantroids is a device that can be used for the hearing impaired. The purpose for the Semantroids is as follows: Small 3-d animations Arms and hands of the animations produce sign language Students can watch instructional videos and Semantroids will sign what is being said Can be rewound or fast-forward Can be used in any discipline

  5. SEEING IMPAIRED Screen Readers A screen reader gives an individual user information from a computer or mobile device through a spoken digitized voice. A screen reader can also offer a user more information than just reading text on a page such as: Whether text is underlined on a page Whether a page or link was checked Whether a box to checked or unchecked

  6. LEARNING DISABLED Access to Math Teachers can use this software program to target specific area in which students need additional practice. Teachers select the number of problems and the beginning and ending rules for worksheets. Students can solve problems on the computer and get immediate, interactive feedback on the problem. Feedback cues the student when the problem is correct or needs more attention. Students can choose to use the organization structures of answer boxes and visual borders around problems.

  7. PHYSICALLY DISABLED IntelliKeys IntlliKeys is an intelligent, alternative keyboard that plugs into any Macintosh or Windows computer. It is an ideal solution for students who have difficulty using a standard keyboard. IntelliTools has created a key board that is flexible enough to meet a wide variety of learning needs.
