  2. Assistive Technology • Assistive technology what is it? According to The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 any form of any item, piece of equipment, or product system, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child and specifically excludes a medical device that is surgically implanted or the replacement of such device

  3. Why use Assistive Technology? • When assistive technology is properly implemented into the regular ed classroom, students are then equipped with the necessary components to succeed in the classroom setting.

  4. According to the Individualized education Act of 2004 requires IEP teams to consider whether assistive technology (AT) devices and services are needed to accomplish the individualized goals and objectives for students with disabilities. • However there are no federal laws stating how IEP teams should construct this process.

  5. Hearing Impaired (AT). • Hearing impaired students can use headphones as assistive technology to accommodate them. • Hearing impaired is a hearing loss that prevents one from properly hearing sound. • This device will enhance the student’s hearing and thus the student will be able to hear and understand what’s going on.

  6. Seeing impaired • Visual impairment is when someone is not able to properly see images. • When this occurs in the classroom setting with students who have bee assigned an IEP a portable reading device can be a form of assistive technology to help support the student’s needs.

  7. Learning Disabled • Some AT devices that helps accommodate student’s with learning disabilities are sticky notes, and index cards, to take organize notes.

  8. Physically Disabled • Physically disabled students can make use of pencil grips, specialized pens, and portable keyboards. • These devices can assist students who have problems with fine motor skills ect.
