The name "Wildcats" became equated with University of Kentucky following a 6–2 football away win over Illinois on October 9, 1909. Commandant Philip W. Corbusier, then the head of the military department at the old State University, said to a gathering of students afterwards that the Kentucky team had "fought like Wildcats.” Get your 2012 UK tickets today! Wildcats Information Joker Phillips was named head coach January, 6, 2010 after coach Brooks' retirement. He was a long time assistant coach and former Wildcat wide receiver. He started well with an away win against Louisville, Kentucky’s main rival. The 2010 team saw a long losing streak to South Carolina broken by defeating the Gamecocks at home. They unfortunately lost games to both Ole Miss and Mississippi State, however, and lost to a Florida team on a down year. They then failed to beat their other serious rival Tennessee, having lost 26 games in a row to the Vols. That record is still the longest losing streak by one team to another in college football. On November 26, 2011, Kentucky finally ended the longest FBS losing streak to any one team by defeating the Tennessee Vols 10-7 at home.
