  1. Circuit Breakers

  2. A circuit breaker is a switch that automatically interrupts electrical flow in a circuit in case of an overload or short. Its basic function is to detect a fault condition and interrupt current flow. Unlike a fuse, which operates once and then must be replaced, a circuit breaker can be reset (either manually or automatically) to resume normal operation. Circuit breakers are made in varying sizes, from small devices that protect an individual household appliance up to large switchgear designed to protect high voltage circuits feeding an entire city.

  3. The circuit breaker is an absolutely essential device in the modern world, and one of the most important safety mechanisms in your home. Whenever electrical wiring in a building has too much current flowing through it, these simple machines cut the power until somebody can fix the problem. Without circuit breakers (or the alternative, fuses), household electricity would be impractical because of the potential for fires and other mayhem resulting from simple wiring problems and equipment failures.

  4. There are two main types of circuit-breakers. • Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) • Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) • Other Circuit Breaker Types • Single-pole breakers • Double-pole breakers • AFCI breakers • Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) circuit breakers

  5. Circuit-breakers offer the following advantages compared to fuses : • Circuit-breakers respond quicker than fuses. • Circuit-breakers are more reliable. • Circuit-breakers are more sensitive. • Unlike fuses which only operate once and need to be replaced a circuit-breaker can be reset.
