  1. Newsham Choice Genetics Collaboration with the National Animal Germplasm Program Newsham Choice Genetics develops and sells elite swine genetic lines that are used to produce commercial pigs. They have nucleus and multiplier herds spread across the USA. The company sells breeding stock in: the USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Central America. • NAGP regularly collects semen as an emergency backup of Newsham swine populations • Repeated collections are performed to keep current genetics available if regeneration is needed • Currently 332 boars with 17,584 units are in repository • Male to male variation is the most important source of variation in semen quality • Boars provided to the repository are also being used to determine the heritability of cryopreserved semen post-thaw motility and as a predictor of fertility • Newsham Choice Genetics has interacted with NAGP in the following ways: • Semen backup of genetic lines • Participant in heritability study of cryopreserved semen on motility • Participant in sperm cell quality of cryopreserved semen study • Company representatives serve as members of the Swine Committee • Used computer assisted sperm analysis from 163 boars to evaluate variation in traits associated with Stud (2 locations), Line (4), Collection (2 ejaculated samples) and Status (2 Fresh vs Cryopreserved) • Significant sources of variation in sperm cell traits were associated with the stud where the boar was housed, semen status, and among boars Table 1. Levels of significance for sources of variation for sperm cell traits • Swine Committee members provide advice about what enters & exits the repository • Aid directly & indirectly in collection activities & getting the word out about NAGP • Current members affiliated with Newsham Choice Genetics: Archie Clutter & Fields Gunsett
