  3. “ Highlights of a Hero” Mr. Lewis Randolph Marshall was born in Tams, WV on June 22, 1925. He was the youngest child of the late Samuel and Blanche Marshall. Eight siblings preceded him in death; Ira, Dewey, Wilson, Elvin, Emill, Bernard, Neal and Nona. Mr. Marshall was raised in Beckley, West Virginia where he attended both elementary school and high school. In 1948, Mr. Marshall received his Bachelors degree from Bluefield State College. Following graduation, he accepted a dual position as teacher and coach at Carnegie High School in Marion, VA. From 1952 to 1965, Mr. Marshall held a number of positions at the former West End High School as a teacher, assistant principal and a highly respected and admired coach. His career reached another plateau in 1965 when he was appointed principal of the Washington Coleman Elementary School. After leaving the Halifax County School system in 1970, Mr. Marshall joined the Virginia Community College System as a counselor at the Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg, VA. In 1974, he Was employed by the Southside Virginia Community College as Counselor and subsequently Director of the Continuing Education Department. During this period, Mr. Marshall received a Masters Degree in counseling from the University of Virginia. He also studied at Dartmouth College, Columbia University, Virginia State College and the University of Louisville. Upon his retirement in 1990, Mr. Marshall became very active in the West End High School Alumni Association that he organized in 1974 and remained an Active member to the very end. Mr. Marshall, was married 58 wonderful years to the late Mrs. Josephine P. Marshall who passed away on February 5, 2007. Their lives together were defined by commitment to their family, students, community, profession and love for each other. Mr. Marshallis survived by his loving children; Dr. Timothy Marshall (Jacqueline), Mr. Lewis A. (Tony) Marshall and Mrs. Teresa Chapman (Lawrence). He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren; Lisa, Larry, Marshall, Timothy and great-grandchildren; La’Nae and Mia. Throughout the years, Mr. Marshall has touched many lives including his relatives, friends, students, fraternity brothers and colleagues. ..…………Farewell Mr. Marshall…………..

We are also thankful for the sympathy and gratitude shown to our family following his death. Special thanks to the West End High School Alumni Association, Ms. Commie Bussey, Mr. George Lancaster, Jeffress Funeral Home and the Ebenezer CME Church for your untiring efforts in making this tribute a reality to showcase our Father deeds and services to mankind. **Family, friends and colleagues are invited to join the family for repast at the Ebenezer CME Church immediately following the interment.

And to make this evening even more special, you are able To look around the room to see how May people you have helped along the Way. You showed us the value of Leadership, and social interaction which Were important skills for us during the old but unforgotten “Jim Crow Era” As we reflect on our past experiences with you, we will remember your Words of encouragement and wisdom. The Lessons you taught both inside and outside the classroom will remain with us forever. You taught us as young adults to come together in great causes. You taught us to overcome stereotypes, Selfish thoughts and behaviors. You are one of the r reasons why so many of us moved towards development and progression of family, communities and our ourselves.
