BACKGROUND Dompet Dhuafa Foundation (DD) is a non profit organization that solemn to empowering human standing of poor people through community fund, called ZISWAF (zakat or religius obligatory, infaq/ shadaqa or charity, wakaf or communal ownership) and other halal and lawful social fund, from private, group, or company. Started on July 2, 1993, as a sister institution of the Republika daily newspaper. Six months earlier, it was an informal expression of the newspaper employees’ social responsibility after seeing the problems caused by a famine that faced the people of Gunung Kidul, one of the poorest areas of the country, in Yogyakarta province. Then Republika’s management provided a little space appealing for donations from the readers. The column was called “Dompet Dhuafa,” literally meaning “A Purse for the Poor.” The column appeared every day. With its motto, Can you sleep well while our close neighbors are starving?, the column proved effective as soon as it was launched.

MISSION • To take the lead in developing community empowering movement • To cultivate and nurture the networking of community development institutions • To cultivate and build on our community’s strengths and assets to promote self-reliance • To advocate the paradigm of civil society especially in social justice.
