  1. Composition of Matter

  2. All matter is made up of atoms. Elements- when all the atoms in the matter are the same. There are 118 elements. Ex: Carbon and Oxygen

  3. Compounds • Compounds- matter that is made up of 2 or more combined elements. • Compounds look different than the elements that make them up.

  4. Compound Ex: • Ex: H & O = H2O C & O = CO2 C,H & O = C6H12O6

  5. Substance • Substance- matter that is either an element or a compound.

  6. Mixture • Mixture- material that is made up of 2 or more substances that can be separated physically.

  7. 2 Types of Mixtures • Heterogeneous • Homogeneous

  8. Heterogeneous Mixtures • Heterogeneous Mixture- mixture that is unevenly mixed. • You can see the stuff in the mixture.

  9. Heterogeneous Mixture Ex:

  10. Homogeneous Mixture • Homogeneous Mixture- mixture that is evenly (uniformly) mixed. • Homogeneous Mixtures are also called solutions.

  11. Homogeneous Mixture Ex:

  12. Colloid • Colloid- a heterogeneous mixture that never settles. • Ex: milk or fog

  13. Suspension • Suspension- heterogeneous mixture that contains a liquid where visible particles settle.

  14. Suspension Examples

  15. Tyndall Effect • Tyndall Effect- the scattering of light by particles in a mixture.

  16. Tyndall Effect Ex:
