  1. Composition of MatterElements and Atoms By Sierra, Rachel, Haley

  2. What are elements? • Elements are the building blocks of all matter. • Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances. • Examples: • Oxygen • Carbon • Gold • Copper • Iron • A complete listing of the elements appears in the periodic table.

  3. Elements in the human body • Oxygen • Carbon • Hydrogen • Nitrogen 3.2 % Nitrogen 65% oxygen 18.5% Carbon 9.5% Hydrogen

  4. Major Roles of Elements in the body… • Oxygen • Reacts with glucose or food to produce ATP Energy and the Carbon dioxide that we breathe out. • Makes up 65.0% of our body mass.

  5. Major Roles of Elements in the body… • Carbon • Carbon is required to form proteins, carbohydrates, fats and nucleic acid. • Also helps determine the body structure. • Makes up 18.5% of our body mass.

  6. Major Roles of Elements in the body... • Hydrogen • Hydrogen atoms help to form water molecules, which are essential in our bodies. • Hydrogen also influences the pH of body fluids. • Makes up 9.5% of our body mass.

  7. Major Roles of Elements in the body… • Nitrogen • Nitrogen is found in many organic molecules, including proteins and nucleic acids that make up DNA. • Makes up 3.2% of our body mass. Nitrogen Base

  8. Other Elements found in the body…

  9. What are Atoms? • Atoms are the smallest particle that still retains its special properties. • Atoms are the building blocks of elements. Atomic Symbol… • Every element is designated by a one- or two-letter chemical shorthand called a atomic symbol.
