  1. Atoms and Matter

  2. Matter • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space (volume). • The universe is full of matter. • At your table, write down 5 examples of matter in the science classroom.

  3. Elements • Matter is made of elements. • Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into any other substances • There are more than 100 elements that combine to make up all living and nonliving things. • Elements are shown on a Periodic Table.

  4. Atoms • Matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms. • Atoms are the building blocks from which all matter is made. • These particles are too small to be seen without a powerful microscope.

  5. Elements and Atoms? • Atoms are similar, and different… • H2O has • Two elements: hydrogen and oxygen • Three atoms: 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom • It’s like a cake • Elements: flour, sugar, cocoa • Atoms: 2 cups of flour
